Transfer within engineering school

Hi to all,

Could someone please provide some information regarding following questions:

If student is considering applying to UIUC university, application asks for major choice.

  1. should the first major choice be “Engineering” and second major choice be " Liberal Arts and Sciences" (different schools in UIUC)
    OR
first major choice be computer science and second choice aerospace engineering (bpth majors within same engineering school)

  2. If the student is accepted into computer science engineering school, how easy or difficult is it to transfer to Aerospace engineering?

  3. Is first year of engineering a general engineering for all branches of engineering?

  4. does UIUC put a limit on number of Early admissions (EA) that a student can apply to?

  1. Your first and second choice are majors, not schools. You can, of course, select majors in the same or in different schools as first and second choice. Generally, you’d select something with less selective admissions as your second choice in case you aren’t admitted to the first one.

  2. Computer Science, BioEngineering and Mechanical Engineering are oversubscribed and most difficult for admissions as an incoming freshman or transfer (internal or external). Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering are the next most selective tier. Civil and Aero are in the third tier. So, it would be easier to transfer out of Computer Science into Aerospace than from Aero to CS. That said, it may still depend on having good grades.

  3. For most freshman, many classes would be common among most engineering and science degrees. If you have a lot of AP/transfer credits, then you might have some courses specific to your major the first year.

  4. No. As far as I know, there is no disadvantage to EA at UIUC.
