I am currently a high school senior, who has applied to about 12 colleges. I really really regret though not applying to Cal. I have read on the Cal website that they only accept transfer students who are going into their junior year of college. Is this really true? Do they ever accept sophmores? I really want to apply so badly as a transfer, but not that late. (I am also an out-of-state resident)

I think the main admission criteria (besides personal statement and other stuff) are that you complete AT LEAST 60 units (usually completed through IGETC). To acquire this many units usually takes about 2 years (making you a junior). It is possible that you complete the 60 units before 2 years, but not many people can do it because they also have to complete the pre-reqs for their major on top of the IGETC. Of course if you have AP credits, I think they can be applied so you won’t have to take those classes all over again.

I recommend asking your question on the UC Transfers forum. They can offer you a better answer.

Depending on your major you actually don’t need IGETC. Ones with high unit prerequisites just need 60 units and a few liberal arts classes. It is possible to transfer as a sophomore, but I think it is pretty rare. Berkeley is known to be finicky about having 60 units, so if you don’t have that it’s unlikely they will admit you.

You might not need IGETC, but you will still need all the lower divs the university requires (which IGETC satifies). Regardless of your major, you still have to complete those lower divs.
