I just started at UCI (freshman), but just got news that my mother has been diagnosed with cancer. I need/want to transfer ideally to Davis to be closer to home.

I read that you need 60 units to even be able to transfer, is that correct? I know its harder to b/c CC has priority, and I doubt it matters anymore, but I was accepted to Davis when I applied last year/this year.

So would I need 60 units before end of Spring? Or could I also take summer school/etc and have that count towards the 60?

Yes, you need 60 Semester (90 quarter) units by the end of the spring semester before you transfer. Considering your situation, I would probably just drop out of UCI and go to CC near your hometown. You can get guaranteed admission from a CC to UCD and you can be back home immediately.

For something this serious, I’d suggest withdrawing and attending a local community college. Family has to come first , like if you think your needed at home then you should finish out this quarter, then withdraw citing family issues . Otherwise your talking about waiting 2 years and still not being sure if you can get into UCD as a transfer
