Is it common for students to get accepted to Brown as a transfer after first being wait listed when you applied as a HS senior? If so, how do you stand out as a trasfer applicant and does the school that you chose to attend carry any weight? I attended my states flagship college.

“Common” is a relative term. No it’s not common, since transfer application is also, like regular admission, very selective. However the total transfer acceptance percentage rate of admission is higher than the primary application rate due to: 1. self selection. Students who apply for transfer seem to have more direct reasons for transfer and have researched the process and are more selective in where they are applying (it takes more effort to transfer when you are already attending a school where you are presumably doing very well to think you have the grades to make it possible to transfer.) 2. The transfer students are more likely as above to have “high credentials”. 3. smaller number of applicants per number of slots. Brown has been accepting a pretty high number of transfers in recent years.
How do you stand out: 1. As above, know why you want to go to Brown specifically and what you bring to Brown. (read the transfer threads from last year to see what sort of students applied and got in.) 2. Try to have close to straight A’s in your courses. This is a bit more important if you are at a school that is “a notch down” from Brown in the regular admission acceptance level. It shows Brown that whatever made them not accept you the first time (and since you were waitlisted, and not rejected at first, it may just be random percentage type of factors) is less of a factor this time, in that you are (still) a stellar student.
