Transferring After 1 Semester

Hello all, my name is Lauren and, to make it brief:

My senior year of high school I got really sick and missed almost two months of school. I couldn't make up most of the work in time with the amount of IB testing I had and as a result, failed a couple of classes. I was still able to graduate since I was ahead and took more than I need to, yet, only with the Standard Diploma. My GPA dropped all the way down to 2.982 and the only school that still wanted me for Fall Semester that I had applied to was East Carolina University...so I went. I wish I had stayed home and waited to make the decision I wanted, but I felt so rushed by my family that I chose ECU. Now, I have been here for almost a month and have realized this really isn't the place for me. I would like to transfer back home to George Mason University but I don't know if, after one semester, my chances are that great with only 15 credits completed (entering I didn't think I would be transferring). Their website says, "most of our applicants have completed around or over 30 credits"...which implies it is all sophomores and upperclassmen. Yet, they do allow spring semester transfers. They specify that since my credits are below 30, I have to send my high school transcript/resume/SAT scores, etc. in addition to my first semester at college (which I completely understand). Yet, even if I do really well this semester, do I have a chance?

Thanks,
- Lauren

Hey Lauren!

I have a similar situation like you; I want to transfer to Maryland from Howard University after this one semester.

Anyways, my gpa is similar to yours from high school and I actually got into George Mason as a Freshman applicant with a 1570 SAT. I wrote a really good essay and I got in. Basically, if you apply early and write a really good essay explaining your situation in high school and why you want to transfer, you could probably get in.

Mranity- you made my day :) It is such a relief to know that it's possible because so many people have told me GMU has gotten really competitive, but then again, most of them work for the University haha. I got a 1600 SAT and writing is my specialty so hopefully it will work out!

How is your process going with transferring? I'm so nervous about it, but at the same time I know it's the right path for me :)
