Hi, I just had a few questions and could use some advice as to what my options realistically are as an older student. I am currently 24 years of age (I turn 25 in April). I’ve been attending community college part-time since I left high school and had never really been confident as to what I actually wanted to be. I dealt with a lot of mental health issues and it really hampered my ability to think clearly at the time. Well, after taking on a few odd jobs in the health care field and doing some real soul searching I’ve decided that I would like to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering. I’ve been living with my grandmother since I left high school, and really want to get out there and experience things. I was never a “social butterfly” but at this point in my life I’m feeling stir crazy. Is transferring out of state still and option for me? My GPA currently sits at a 3.7. I stay in Michigan and have applied to my local university, Wayne State, but I’ve heard some very negative things about the school itself. Theres also University of Michigan, but it is a very competitive school and I am unsure if I would be accepted. My biggest problem in transferring, I would think, would be my age and that I did not do well in high school. I was moved down south around that time and had really tough culture shock that greatly effected my grades. I ended up graduating with a 2.5. My Composite ACT score when graduating was like a 19, I didn’t do very well. My question Is, are there any options for me in attending school out of state? Should I retake the ACT? I’ve never actually looked into this and wouldn’t know the first place to start. Thanks, I really appreciate the help. Sorry if this subject has been beaten to death.
If you will be a junior level transfer, then your college record (3.7) will be more important for transfer admission than your high school record (2.5/19). Check each target college’s web site for more information. You may want to consider MTU as well as UM and WSU for in-state public schools with your major. Out-of-state public universities are likely to be expensive with little or no financial aid, though some private schools may have significant financial aid.
Thanks I believe I have about 60 some odd credits already towards my degree, so from what I understand I will be coming in as a junior.
How much will you be able to afford? I imagine for financial aid schools will consider you independent but it doesn’t mean they will match your need (particularly true with lower stats)
