I’m not a parent, but I didn’t know where to ask this. I transferred from public school to private school this year.
I did very well last year at public high school. Straight A’s. This year I transferred to private school. I thought I’d “learn more,” but in general, I hate it here. I want to go back to my public high school junior year, but I don’t know if it’s a bad idea. If I go back, it’ll be harder for me to get leadership positions in the things I liked doing freshman year.
One of the issues is that my current courses won’t transfer very well. For example, I’m taking world history this year, while my public school friends are taking government. I’m taking chemistry while my public school friends are taking biology. Also, I have a lot of required classes (like health and tech) to get out of the way. According to my counselor, I’d have to take some classes for credit over the summer to catch up. This is an issue as well, since I was planning on doing other pre-collegiate activities over the summer.
So, the bottom line: are my college chances possibly messed up at this point? Should I stay here (for leadership) or should I go?
If you are unhappy at your current school, there is no reason to stay. So what that you took world history and chemistry while your friends are taking government and biology! When you transfer back, you will pick up government and biology while they are taking world history and chemistry.
To expedite things, could you transfer back for second semester?
If you need to take a class over the summer in order to catch up on health/tech/whatever, that is find. Save any “pre-collegiate” stuff for summer after junior year.
My parents aren’t letting me transfer back second semester. They want me to learn commitment, which means sticking through with the private school decision for the rest of the year (even if I don’t like it).
I agree with your other idea. I’ll take the health/tech classes over the summer to catch up, and when I return junior year, I can take the classes that my friends are currently taking this year.
Your parents may also think that you may change your mind again after some more time at the private school. What do you hate about it? Is it hard to make friends or be involved in activities? Are the classes too hard or too easy? Perhaps things will change and you will like it more as you get more used to it and more involved. If not, as others have said, transfer back.
Why did you leave your public school in the first place? Did you get off track that your parents felt the need to transfer you?
