Transferring Credits to Fulfill Course Reqs

Hello,

For a couple of reasons, I really feel that I could benefit from taking a break from school for a semester. However, I may be moving soon, and I would prefer to not live on campus because I don’t want to add those costs to my student debt. I am most of the way done my degree program, so I have more credits than can be transferred to just about any school. Would it be possible for me to just take courses that fulfill the remaining requirements at another school and transfer them in to my current school? I understand that specifics may differ between schools, etc; but I’d just like to know if anybody has done something like this.

(In case this may be important to know, I did go to community college before my current school, but I transferred 54 credits in and not the full 60)

Thanks!

That is too specific a question for anybody here to be able to answer.

In theory, yes you can go to another university and transfer credits back to your ‘home’ university.

BUT: many universities have specific policies about how many of your credits- especially upper level credits-have to be taken at the home university, and within a major there are often courses that must be taken at the home university. Most colleges post their graduation requirements online- start there.

Some schools have a policy that last x credits must be earned at the university.

This is something you need to ask your department. There could be issues with upper-level required courses or residency requirements for a certain number of credits. You don’t want to get to your graduation audit and find out something won’t transfer.

I teach at a 4-year university and I’ve had a couple students in my classes who were fulfilling a degree requirement from another school.

They first had to make sure through their department/school that it was something they could do, then they were advised to get a copy of my syllabus to submit so it could be reviewed, and then they got the ok. (They also had to get the ok from my department since it’s a major-only class).

It worked out fine in both cases, but only because they cleared it all ahead of time.
