Transferring from a CC to a UC...

Hello!
Before anybody asks, I've seen about 3 counselors already and they've all been very unhelpful... Hell, they can't even remember my name. If someone could just hear me out a bit, I'd be very grateful.

Anyway,
I'm a freshman and this is my first semester at a community college in SF. I'm a psychology major.
I don't think I would have any trouble getting into a CSU, as admission is guaranteed to students with at least a 2.5 gpa + completed general ed.
But I want to aim a little higher and try going to a UC. I'm thinking Riverside, Merced, or Santa Cruz since those seem to be the least hard to get into.

I'm a bit confused with which classes to take, and if I even have a chance of getting in...
I heard that even if you don't complete your general ed that you could still get in if you've finished the coursework for your major. But I don't know about that.

According to this website ( Minimum admissions requirements | UC Admissions ) I need to take:

Each course must be worth at least 3 semester units.

These are the classes I registered for this semester:
- Piano (UC transferable but it's only 2 units so I don't think it counts)
- General psychology
- English (non-transferable)
- Interpersonal communication (dropped with a W)
- Philosophy (dropped with a W)

Over the next year and a half I'm basically taking:
- A bunch of psychology classes (developmental psychology, child development, marriage courtship & the family psychology, etc?)
- 2 math classes (non-transferable statistics, and then a transferable statistics class)
- 2 sciences (biology+lab, and a physical science, though I'm not sure which... I'm thinking astronomy since I heard it's easy and doesn't have too much math)
- 2 english classes (composition + critical thinking. both transferable)
- 1 public speaking class
- 2 history classes
- 1 foreign language (I'm thinking chinese)

The highest GPA I feel I could reach is maybe a 3.5, but I'd have to work really hard for it.
I could definitely maintain a 2.8 GPA without much struggle.

I feel that I'm taking more classes than necessary, but it's only because I want to play safe so if I don't make it into a UC then I would still be able to transfer to a CSU.

Also, I don't have any extra curricular activities at the moment but I'm thinking of joining a few clubs in the future or maybe getting a part-time job.

Also one more thing-- what happens if I don't get to transfer within 2 years? I don't want to end up like many other people and get stuck at a community college for more than 2 years. Will it be harder to transfer if I stay longer?

Sorry this was long. Thanks for reading, lol

What you should be taking: Look at assist.org for your major. It should tell you what pre-reqs to do, and it usually says whether or not IGETC is accepted. IGETC is a pattern of GE classes that most UCs accept for most majors. (Some majors, particularly STEM ones, don’t accept IGETC). So, prioritize pre-reqs and IGETC if it applies to you. You should be able to find a list of things to take for IGETC on your CC’s website.

Also, keep in mind that you need to complete your GE requirements at some point, whether you want to or not. Taking them at a CC makes a lot more sense than trying to cram in random breadth courses at a UC.

GPA: Higher is better. I was always towards the high end though so I don’t know which range is reasonable for admissions.

Classes: You need to have 60+ transferable credits. So, whatever you take (‘extra’ classes or not) make sure you’ve met the requirements.

If you can’t transfer after two years, you spend another year at CC and try again. Simple as that. It doesn’t make it harder, and might even help since you can finish up requirements or raise your GPA.

Thank you!

Unfortunately I’ve found that my CC doesn’t have the courses that any UC (besides Berkeley) require :frowning: it says “no course articulated” next to almost every class on assist! there is a CC by me that has some available, but honestly I’m unwilling to drive 45 minutes to go there…

anyways thank you, what you said was helpful :)
