Transferring from a Community College to San Jose State University

I am currently a student at Ohlone Community College, and am in the process of completing classes to transfer to San Jose State University, declaring "BS - Software Engineering" as a major.

I followed the Assist/SJSU articulation chart of classes, and am in the process of finishing those classes up.

I have taken

Math 101A

CS 113

CS 116

English 101A

English 101B

If I understand the chart right, I have these classes left:

Math 101B

Math 101C

Math 103

Math 104

Phys 140

Phys 141

CS 124

Correct me if I am wrong.

Also, I can apply for transfer before finishing these classes, am I right? I just have to finish those 7 before I actually start?

As for GE's, I have completed those.

I followed General Education Plan B (Page 2) on this chart

<a href="https://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.ohlone.edu/org/currguides/20112012/docs/20112012geplans-charts.pdf&sa=U&ei=tyVNUM-cNoLy2QWS-oGQDg&ved=0CA4QFjAD&client=internal-uds-cse&usg=AFQjCNFBqW6RPbn8rfXF651gbJedFhAXtw%5B/url%5D">https://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.ohlone.edu/org/currguides/20112012/docs/20112012geplans-charts.pdf&sa=U&ei=tyVNUM-cNoLy2QWS-oGQDg&ved=0CA4QFjAD&client=internal-uds-cse&usg=AFQjCNFBqW6RPbn8rfXF651gbJedFhAXtw</a></p>

All classes on it are completed.

My current GPA is a 3.0 (yes, I know I will need to raise it for a better chance of getting into SJSU). If there is any more information, please let me know.

And any transfer students who transferred from a community college to SJSU specifically, please give me tips on what to do next.

Yes, You should taking/finishing those classes when you apply.

^^You look in good shape and on track since all GEs are already complete.

As far as next steps: if you anticipate to complete those last major prerequisites before the end of this academic year (2012-2013), then you should apply for CSU admission for SJSU through the CSUMentor website CSUMentor beginning October 1st (to begin the following Fall, 2013-2014). You cannot apply for the Spring 2013 term because SJSU is an impacted campus and is currently not accepting Spring term transfers, nor are they accepting lower-division transfers (<60sem/90qtr units obtained).

If you do not anticipate to finish those major prerequisites before the end of this coming Spring term, then you can still apply, but your chances at admission will be significantly affected. To keep your highest chance of admission you can wait to apply one more academic year (apply in October 2013 for Fall 2014 admission).

I would propose the latter if you are unable to fulfill the major reqs since transfer applicants in the service area gain admission preference. SJSU’s service area is Santa Clara and Santa Cruz counties, and not Alameda, therefore you will need as much advantage as you can get due to the less competitive GPA.

Best of luck.

So I CAN get in, even if I did not finish those major pre-reqs?

From what I understood (along with a friend’s help) I still have to take PE.

Other than that, I have a slight chance of getting in (he tells me I do beat the GPA average for that major of 2.8, but that it doesn’t matter).

Yes, technically you can apply to any CSU so long as you meet the minimum eligibility requirements, which may or may not include major prep courses (depends on campus and major - i.e. impaction). Many transfer applicants apply and successfully transfer every year without all the lower-division major prep courses completed according to assist. HOwever, some majors (like impacted ones) are very competitive and it is highly recommended to have the majors prep done so as to remain a competitive applicant.

Yes, PE is considered Area E of the CSUGE pattern (Life learning or lifelong learning or something like that). PE is required to be CSUGE certified, meaning you will not be required to take any lower-div GE once you transfer to a CSU.

Sometimes it can matter. Since SJSU is considered a state-wide impacted campus, every major they offer is considered impacted (including Software Engineering). When this happens to a major there are other minimum eligibility criteria to be admitted into the impacted major. For example, Software Engineering majors transferring to SJSU for the F12 term must have a 2.4 GPA even though the minimum CSU GPA needs to be a 2.0.

SJSU keeps an updated list here: [SJSU Admission](http://info.sjsu.edu/web-dbgen/narr/admission/rec-1012.html)

It is important, again, to note that the link provides:

So you must meet both the CSU GPA req and the major GPA req for transfer admission to SJSU. A 3.0 is well above that, so as long as you maintain or increase it you will be fine.

You are still at a possible disadvantage when compared to transfer applicants in the Santa Clara or Santa Cruz counties service areas.
