Transferring from a private four year school to a UC

Ok, so here’s my situation. I graduated high school two weeks ago and due to a family situation am attending the private, four year school, California Lutheran University (CLU), and am commuting due to having to live at home for this situation. However, after this year, my family situation will change and I’d like to transfer to a UC farther away so I could stay on campus and have more of a “college experience”. If I can manage to get 60 transferable units by the end of spring semester, does a private school transfer to a UC have any chance at getting accepted? The UC I am targeting is UC Santa Barbara, but any mid to high tier UC would do for me. By taking summer and winter break classes along with Fall/Spring and AP high school credits, I think I could get to 60 credits by the end of Spring semester in 2018. Is it worth it to go through all this trouble and work to apply as a transfer to a UC from a private school?

I’ve considered dropping out of CLU and attending a nearby community college to get the TAG guarantee, would this perhaps be a better route? Another conflicting issue for me is that I am receiving more than enough financial aid at CLU to attend for free, so that makes my decision even harder.

I don’t know. I guess this is just a little rant, but bottom line is would it be possible/worth the effort to transfer from a private school to a UC? And if not, would dropping out and attending my local community college be a better move? Thanks for anyone that replies

A private school to UC Transfer is definitely possible but you are low on the priority for transfer. CC to UC transfer, UC to UC transfer, CSU to UC Transfer, then private to UC transfer. I think TAG is the way to go to ensure you have a higher chance for acceptance to UCSB. Just remember that several majors are not available to TAG applicants at UCSB. Here is the TAG matrix for all the UC campuses which gives details of excluded majors and campus specific criteria.
