I am a rising freshman at an art school and I was wondering how transferring from an art institute to a liberal arts college (no longer pursuing my arts degree) would work, if at all? My art school has me taking no core classes.

Please let me know

My guess would be that your art credits would transfer as a combination of fulfilling art requirements and elective credit. Then you would have to fulfill your required core classes. It is certainly doable, especially since you are a freshman.

You should inquire at the liberal arts colleges you are considering.

tef1221, a lot of your admissions will be based on your stats from high school in addition to the coursework you do at art school. That doesn’t mean that your coursework from art school will transfer over or might serve you in having units done, but they’ll use it as an evaluation of the type of student you are. They might end up being considered electives, but won’t help you in getting your new major or degree completed at whatever school you transfer to. I actually went to art school up until my junior year, and I know what you’re talking about with the no core classes. I applied during my junior year, was rejected at all the schools I applied to, primarily because my gpa was no where near the average or minimum requirements for the schools that I would later go on to be accepted after doing a 1.5 year in a half at community college.

To be honest, whatever you’re doing at art school right now is pointless. If a school takes you straight out of art school, you’d be starting as a freshman, even though you would be considered a “transfer” applicant. Your best bet is simply starting from scratch at a community college and transferring after a year from community college. Many liberal art colleges including universities have minimum transfer requirements like english courses etc that art school doesn’t offer, or that are schools don’t meet the equivalents of.

It depends on how far along you are. I transferred out of an art school after one semester and I spent the next semester at a liberal arts school where I completed my freshman year and will now go into my second year as a sophomore. Most of my classes counted as electives and after speaking with an advisor I realized that it wouldn’t be too hard for me to catch up and all I had to do was take an extra class each semester or some summer classes to fulfill major requirements. It is possible so don’t be discouraged. And don’t think of your time at art school a waste. Even though I changed my mind about my major, I never regretted going to art school since it taught me a lot about what I really wanted to do in life, etc.
