Transferring from Babson College

Hi all,

I am a sophomore in Babson College and while Babson is a great college, I do not feel like I fit in here the most so I am looking for colleges that are just as good or hopefully better academically and in terms of career placement that would accept a transfer into junior year. I have a 3.7 GPA currently.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Major? Budget?

Can you say much about what you would like different in a university?

Babson is relatively small. Do you want a different small school, or a larger university?

What is it that you don’t like about Babson? It’s hard to post alternatives to solve a problem when we don’t know what the problem is.

Do you want to stay in MA? Do you still want a business school or are you looking to change your major?

Check out the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, Indiana University Kelley, and Boston University.

Hard to make recommendations without more information concerning whether or not you want to continue to pursue a major in business and in what specific area of business as well as your budget, geographic preference, career goal, and your specific likes and dislikes.

I still want to continue as a business major, preferably specification in Finance. Budget is not really a problem right now and I do not have any geographical limitations either.

As for why I want to transfer, it is because a big part of the Babson student body are kids of wealthy business families and it makes the whole lifestyle very preppy. Plus, the school itself is very small and I do not get to interact with anyone pursuing a major outside of business.

Perhaps a larger state school with a good business school and a wider mix of people?

U Mass, Rutgers, Penn State, SUNY Binghampton, Indiana, Ohio State, South Carolina

BU is an interesting suggestion. It would be a very different experience in many ways. Large international flair, tons of kids outside B school curriculum, urban, great hockey team, etc. Also has very good placement in business / finance jobs, especially in the northeast. UMass would also be an interesting choice.

There are some that want that all business all the time environment. Others want a different experience and the opportunity to take a wider range of classes (although that part might be diminished at many schools as the business major reqs will take up most of your classes going forward). Still, just being able to befriend and chat with a more diverse range of interests sounds appealing to you.

Different strokes…

I agree that your state flagship is a good place to start. If it is MA, then you should know that the Isenberg school at UMass is very good. Private schools like Boston College and Fordham are going to have the same preppiness issues as Babson. We know kids that go to both and they are the same type of kids that you say you want to get away from. I think BU is an interesting suggestion. Maybe look at NYU also since money is not an issue for you.

I know that Babson is a great school academically and it stands out when it comes to entrepreneurship. Hence, I would like a school that is better academically. In that regard, I am trying to decide if I should be looking at the top ranked schools such as NYU, Carnegie Mellon, USC and Georgetown.

I am also open to studying on the west coast which could take me to job opportunities in Silicon Valley.
