So after attending orientation this past week, I'm not so sure anymore that I want to continue on with CS as a major. I just took a good long time to think about it and I really don't see myself loving the field and the careers that it would provide; also, while I am a good student at math and science, I have really grown tired of them and have begun to hate those classes.

I was considering switching into advertising because it sounds interesting to me and honestly the potential jobs sound like something I would have fun doing. I don't want to be stuck in some dead end computer science job where I program all day and don't enjoy what I am doing. I feel like advertising uses my strengths; I love art and graphic design, and I feel like I am a creative thinker who comes up with interesting ideas.

Anyways, I have a few questions.

How do I play this? Do I switch out all my classes for core classes and maybe one or two comms classes so I can appeal to the people who read my application?

How difficult of a transfer would this be?

How soon would I be able to transfer if I started the process this very first semester? Also, what kind of GPA would I need to complete this transfer if I am out-of-state?

This one isnt directly related to school. For those who are informed about these majors, does this seem like a decent option to take? Would I be able to get a job in advertising when I graduate from school?

Thank you for any answers or comments.

I’m not sure what year you’re in, but most Advertising courses have prerequisites. I’m transferring in as a Junior and have to plan out things carefully. This Fall I’m planning on taking Adv318J(only 2 shots to make a B), SSC306, and MKT320F. I’m also taking an intro class for my backup major and probably a foreign language course.

I haven’t had the impression that it’s difficult. You just have to make sure your application is strong.

Yes, start the process the first semester. You will be notified if you were accepted during Winter break.
I’m under the impression this is for an internal transfer. If that’s the case, then being out-of-state shouldn’t matter at this point(at least that’s how I feel). Your a Longhorn now! The GPA requirement is a minimum of 2.25, but I would shoot for at least a 3.5. I’ve seen one applicant on here with lower GPA and was accepted, but do your best.

I haven’t looked into the program or career opportunities from a graphic design (creative) point of view. I can only offer what I know about creative type positions.
I stayed after the transfer session at orientation to talk with the presenter, and I also meet a graduate from awhile back. From talking with them and other previous ad people it seems to me that the cream rises to the top fast in the creative ad department, and is well compensated. If your just average it is going to take patience, and possibly a second job. These are pretty cool positions to have, and as result are very competitive.

I use to be a GIS major. I too have taken a bunch of programming courses, and hated them even though I was able to obtain A’s. Just wasn’t my cup of tee. I was always interested in marketing, but couldn’t find a curriculum that steered away from general business topics. UT’s ad program offered more of what I was looking for.

I don’t want to discourage you from using your creative/graphic skills, but I would suggest that you consider other fields as well. I’m sure you could apply the same skills in many other areas. Make sure you know what you want to get out of the advertising program. Go talk with people in the Ad Dept and pick their brains for help.

I hope I have helped and not made the decision more difficult for you. Good Luck!

Thanks, any more info from anyone?
