Transferring to communication?

Due to financial problems and my family's lack of savings, I'm having to go to UNT for (at least) freshman and sophomore years. I'm wondering how difficult it would be to transfer to UT's school of communication as an advertising major after two years at UNT once my family and I have had some time to save money.

My older son is at UT Austin. He transferred from Liberal Arts to Communication, first to PR, then to Advertising. To get into advertising, you have to get at least a B in the Intro to Advertising course. I suggest you contact the School of Communications advisors to see if there is a course where you are in school now that would qualify you to transfer directly into the Advertising major. Once you are in the major, there is a strict schedule of courses that you have to follow, many of which have prerequisites. It’s really important to do everything in the proper order to get done without having to take an extra semester. You can find most of the info you’ll need on the School of Communication’s website. Good luck!

I’m applying as a transfer into advertising for this fall. I will definitely post my result in the 2011/12 Transfer Guide thread, so you can check my stats and how it turns out for me there.

(To somewhat reiterate what chemcolo said)

I don’t exactly know your chances well enough, I just know that if you can… try to transfer for the spring semester of your sophomore year just because you have to take a required course (ADV318J) before you’re accepted into the major. 318J is a course that is generally taken freshman or sophomore year, but there are juniors in it too. I’m only saying this because you may have to spend some summer school or an extra semester at UT if you don’t get this class out of the way soon which could cost your family more. The advertising program is structured among prerequisites and you have to pass x class and take y class in order to get into z class.

That’s my advice to you. The 318J class isn’t hard, but it is difficult to pass and a lot of people do end up having to take it twice in order to get the required B.

If you have any other questions, I would be more than happy to help. I’m a third year advertising major :)

Also, I know that you HAVE to take 318J. There are no courses that can take its place, especially from other schools.

I am a freshmen at UTD that just applied for Fall 2011 into advertising. But of course there was no way for me to take the 318J ADV course. does that mean that I am automatically rejected?

My current gpa is 3.94 and intend to keep it high by the end of spring semester.
So I thought I really had a good chance, but after hearing about that prerequisite, I feel very unsure. Did I just waste my time applying?

You can still be accepted, but must pass 318j adv with at least a B to stay in the program.

ah ok… thanks. that makes alot more sense now hehe

do u know what the average gpa for getting into communications is?
my essays were just decent-very good, so I’m hoping that they really just care about gpa.

and by any chance do you know how UT reviews the transfer applications? I know freshmen admissions were rolling, so the faster you turned it in the better chances. But since I have to wait for my spring semester to finish before sending in my transcript, does it even matter how early i turn in my application?

thanks

I’m not sure what the average GPA is, but I saw your stats on the transfer page and they should get you in for sure.
I guess it wouldn’t matter when you submit your application, since you will have to send in your spring grades.

thank you!
guess i just gotta keep up my gpa for now!
This forum really helps relieve anxiety hehe :)
