Transferring from MSU

What is acceptance like to UMich (college of Literature, Science and Arts) for transfer students? I am a sophomore right now at MSU and I am in James Madison College, a small residential college within MSU that is more intense than the other colleges. I am also double majoring in Classical Studies. I want to come to U-M to study Classics (their program is much better than MSU) and I want to eventually go on to get a phD. My grade point my first semester was a 3.9. Then I transfered into James Madison, which is much harder, and my gpa the second semester was a 3.1. My GPA, however, will definitely go up after this semester. James Madison students are often accepted into Ivy Leagues after graduation, so I am hoping it will work in favor of my acceptance.

What are my chances? Any advice?

Just accepted as a second semester sophomore. Hoping to double major in Poli Sci and Econ. I am At WMU right now, but i had a 3.89 last year and 27 ACT. Lots of EC's and was accepted before most individuals were, oct 16th. Had my app in and complete by mid September - app in by the 2nd and all materials received by oct 8th. So if a schmuck from WMU ( i am in the Honors College though, not much by UM standards but good for WMU) with a crappy hs gpa - 3.0 - can get in with a 3.89 from WMU, i'd say you have a competitive chance for getting in.

My niece last year was denied with an overall gpa of 3.9, and dean's lists every semester after her sophomore year at MSU. Who knows exactly what they look at?

rjkofnovi you are correct - the admin process is very odd and erratic - i have a friend who was top ten in my grad class gets denied out of hs and goes to Kzoo college for one semester - got a 3.0 and the transfered and got in... so who knows.

To say that UMich is weird in admissions decisions is an understatement.
I attend one of the satellite schools of UMich, UMich-Dearborn. Many people who go here had solid HS stats but were unable to get into UMich as a freshman for some reason, so they attend Dearborn which has cheap tuition so that they could easily transfer into the Ann Arbor Campus.

I personally know someone who went to Dearborn because she wanted to transfer into UMich-Ann Arbor despite the fact she got into other pretty decent schools. she had a 3.79 HS GPA with a 2010 SAT and 29 ACT, All APs and what not, and UMich denied her freshman year. Then, she got a 4.0 at Dearborn and applied for LSA Fall 2008 and got denied AGAIN. On the other hand, this dude in one of my classes got a 2.7 in HS, and finished his sophomore year in college with a 3.0 and got accepted as a transfer. So yeah, I really dont know what UMich is looking for.

I dont blame your neice rjkofnovi, its really strange.

Generally speaking, I think sophomores (applying to enter as Juniors) have a better chance than freshmen (applying to enter at sophomores).

FWIW, U-M is aware of James Madison college and the kind of student enrolled there, so that works in the OP's favor.

Thanks guys
