I will be attending oxford university or London School Of Economics this fall, and was wondering if it is possible to transfer to a really good american school (HYPSC level) after 1 year. I had a really bad GPA because I did not care about school, but I did well on tests(AP’s and ACT) so i got into oxford/lse but not really any good american universities. I really want an american college experience, and the field I want to go into (investment banking) is extremely hard to recruit from from another country. I am a US citizen if that helps. I would also greatly appreciate if you know anybody who did this and could share if their hs gpa held them back.
Thanks
PS: I will go in with an open mind and I know how fortunate I am to be in this position, but these schools don’t give me the flexibility that US universities feel. I also want an american undergrad experience.
You might or might not be able to transfer. If your HS GPA was so bad that you didn’t get into any of the Ivy-level’s this year, you will need truly excellent records from Oxford/LSE in order to be considered for transfer admission a year or two from now. If you need to be there for two years to pull up your GPA, then you might as well stay for the third year and just be done with your undergrad degree.
Were you admitted anywhere at all in the US? Do you like the US undergrad experience enough to choose one of those not-Ivy-level institutions over Oxford/LSE?
What about doing a semester or year exchange from Oxford/LSE to some place in the US? That would give you a chance to have some of the US undergrad experience.
There is nothing wrong with completing your undergrad degree at Oxford/LSE, and then coming to the US for grad school. Think about that too.
“There is nothing wrong with completing your undergrad degree at Oxford/LSE, and then coming to the US for grad school.”
Frankly, I would choose that route.
And it’s interesting that you want the “American undergrad experience”. Because while the student experience at LSE isn’t like attending a normal American college (it’s like attending NYU or grad school in a big city), Harvard and Yale (and Rice and Caltech) actually tried to model their undergraduate experience after the Oxbridge college system. Yet you list H and Y among your top target schools. I find it strange.
