Transferring from riverside community college to UCLA

Ucla has always been my dream (i knew it was unrealistic) but during my first two years of high school i was extremely lazy. I am a senior now and have straight A’s. Last year as a junior i had straight A’s and one C in math.

I know that i obviously can’t get into UCLA with my current high school grades, lol. but i was reading the transfer eligibility list and i would have to get a 3.5 GPA in CC to have a good chance to be accepted, along with extracurriculars and what not.

If I maintain a 3.5, try my hardest, do my typical volunteer work, will I have a chance to be accepted? I know I am capable of having good grades, i was just a lazy, dumb 14 year old who thought she was too cool for school.

I also did not hit my A-G requirements in high school. I’m behind a year on math.

I want to major in sociology, btw.

Thank you for reading

I meant to say *riverside city, not community

@celestica456 Trust me, there are people up here who did worse than you and they’re at Berkeley and UCLA. You definitely have a shot. Pick your majors wisely if you believe you will stay at 3.5. You may find it’s easier than you think and you’ll have a higher GPA.

Here is a link to the average admitted GPAs by major for transfer students admitted to UCLA. To be competitive you need to be at about that level (more or less).

Good luck! And you didn’t mess up. Everything’s for a reason. You simply weren’t ready.

My lowest GPA in high school was a 0.73  - it’s doable. Getting admitted as a transfer student is much less about extracurriculars/volunteer work than freshman admission is. You should primarily focus on getting a high GPA, completing your general ed, and completing your major prerequisites.

Agree with above posters. You should aim higher than a 3.5 for UCLA Sociology. The average admitted GPA for Soc is about 3.65. Aim higher, so if you fall short, then you’re still in the mix. If you aim for 3.5, and fall short, then it’s an uphill battle. Do ECs that exhibit leadership, not just membership. Then use your PS to show how your ECs, leadership skills, academic achievements, personal developmebr, etc make you a great fit for ucla.

Above all, make sure you take all prereqs and for Sociology, you should also complete IGETC. Make sure you plan your time out wisely, so you have 60+ units completed with no issue.
