Transferring into the spring semester or fall semester?

I want to transfer out of my university but I know I will be unable to really make a case for myself until my Sophomore year (my first semester of Freshman year is pretty weak right now). In the mean time I want to continue to work hard, explore my interests, and build up myself so that I can be a strong student, both in real life and on paper. Anyway, because I plan on transferring sophomore year, do you think it will be better for me to transfer into the spring semester or fall semester?

I don't want to miss out in opportunities often provided for fresh/soph students, but I wonder about the financial aid situation and also the chances of getting in. Oh! And I plan on applying to most of the Seven Sister colleges, namely Wellesley, Smith, Barnard, etc.
