I'll be transferring this fall with the maximum 70 units. My question is about transferring more units afterward. I still have a few more lower division classes to finish and, if I end up at CSUN, might want to take them at my community college. Does the 70 unit cap apply to all classes or just the ones you take prior to transferring? If it does apply to all classes, can I still take classes and have them count toward my degree but not my unit count?

check the schools policy, but if they say that 70 units is the max then you won’t be able to transfer in ANY extra credits. so you can pick which ones you would like to use. It doesn’t matter where you take them; essentially the school you transfer to wants you to take a certain number credits with them.

But I mean might I be able to simply use the class as a prerequisite/major requirement without transferring the units? Like if I took calculus 3 at community college, I don’t need the 5 units but since it’s a prerequisite for DE and a major requirement, could it still be used to satisfy those?

good question. in my case i cannot transfer more than 70 units to a UC. so i have opted to take more major classes this summer at the UC i will be attending. i decided to do this because it is my understanding that in order to graduate at my UC of choice, i need to take more units at that school. certainly each student is unique, so i suggest checking directly with your UC. or consider taking summer classes for an “Early Start”. not sure how to pay for the classes, but i did update my FAFSA and included all the UC schools that i might atttend on last years fafsa. just in case i can qualify for a summer pell grant. that will pay the cost of tuition. it will be nice to start in the summer too, and learn my way around the school before the crush of fall semester. keep us posted, i am curious what you discover. also, taking summer classes will insure that i only spend 2 years at a UC–and that is all i can afford!

I found the answer :).

“Only 70 units from a community college can be applied to the total units toward a degree. If you take a community college course past the 70-unit limit, the class can meet a course requirement and will become part of your cumulative GPA, but no additional units will be earned toward the minimum number of units required to graduate.”
