So I’m a current freshman at Cal and i’m transferring in the fall as the school was not the right fit for me. I’m really interested in attending Duke but I’m not sure when I’d hear back or what the chances of me getting in would be. I have gotten accepted into Umich Ann Arbor as well as IU, I have a current 3.5 GPA at Cal and my high school GPA was a 4.2 and graduated a Full IB student. If anyone has any idea as to when id hear back from the following places please lmk!
- Duke
- Notre Dame
- Uchicago
- UVA
- Purdue
- Northwestern
- Yale
- USC
Would you please give a little detail on what you didn’t like at Cal? I’m worried it’s a pressure cooker, but would love to hear your experience. Thanks!

Personally I’ve just had a hard time fitting in with what seems to be almost everyone here. I’m from out of state so it’s been pretty difficult to find people like me and I am also Hispanic and Cal’s diversity isn’t the best so it made me feel like even more of an outsider. Have also had several problems with the financial aid office and have encountered several people who belittle your abilities. All in all this made cal not the best fit to me so I’m trying to attend school in the Midwest where I’m from or the east coast next fall!
Is the diversity noticeably different then what is published ?

I was curious about the ethnic diversity at the campuses you are considering, so looked up the % hispanic at the colleges listed above:
Cal 14.1%
Duke 6.78%
Notre Dame 10.3%
UVA 6.17%
Purdue 3.23%
Northwestern 8.68%
Yale 13.5%
USC 15.6%
Perhaps you are looking at diversity in more ways that just Hispanic/Latino representation, but I thought you should see these numbers if you hadn’t already. Best of luck to you.

Thanks so much for opening up and letting us know why Cal isn’t a great fit. No matter the reason, you deserve to go to a school where you feel comfortable. Good luck to you!!!

To me I feel that cal was advertised as a very diverse schools hence my interest in going. But I genuinely do think that everything shifts once you’re actually there. I know from my experience I know about 2 Hispanic students and maybe have around another 10 that I consistently see in my five classes I take which are some pretty big classes such as econ.
