Transferring Question

Hi! I am currently attending Central Michigan University this semester, and I absolutely hate it. I originally left the CMU the first week I was there then I came back to give it another shot, but I still do not like it. I'm very far from my home and I am planning to transfer next semester. I realized that because I am transferring from a public school to a private school, and that most of my credits will not transfer to the university that I will be attending in the spring. So, my question is...Should I just drop out now or wait till the end of the semester? Honestly, I would love to leave now. I absolutely hate where I'm at because of multiple reasons. What should I do?

Why do you think that your credits won’t transfer, are they remedial classes, occupational training, etc.? Have you passed the deadline where you can drop classes without getting Ws? Can you get any of your tuition back?

I was speaking with a transfer student the other day and they were telling me how they went to a community college and almost all of their credits would not transfer over (even math). The deadline has passed for me to drop classes, so I know there will be some type of a fee. I have no idea if I can get my tuition back. Is it possible if you can? If I can’t, I will have to stay here a semester (I really don’t want to do this though).

If you are past the drop deadline, I would never recommend a student take all Ws, as that stays on your college record forever. It will make it very difficult to transfer when you have a semester of unexcused Ws.

You need to talk to your school about whether they have tuition returns and what the dates are. However, IMO, the loss of tuition is much less of an impact than having Ws on your transcript.

Can you clarify what w’s are? thanks!

W stands for Withdraw. It means you signed up but never completed the class, so you don’t get a grade, just a W. This is not a good thing to have on your college record, particularly if you have an entire semester of Ws that are not due to a medical or some other valid reason.

Not sure why you are comparing your courses at CMU with someone else’s CC classes as far as being transferrable. Go to your counselor and ask them if your courses are likely to be transferrable. If they are general ed requirements that are not remedial, then they more than likely are.

My advice to you is to go back to your classes and get to work!

I will see what my academic counselor says. I will be meeting with her on Friday. I have not missed one class and I have all A’s. The problem is I hate being here. It’s not because I’m lazy. I work very hard. It’s because the school I am attending right now is not what I thought it would be…

I’m sorry, I did not mean to imply that you’re lazy. Sometimes we aren’t where we want to be, but it’s important to figure out what’s going to get you to a better place.

I think you will find that toughing it out for one semester and getting As is much more likely to get you where you want to be than leaving with a semester of Ws, which is going to keep you from transferring easily.

Good luck!

It’s okay! I just didn’t want to look like I was giving up because of that reason. Thanks for the advice!
