Transferring Schools Mid-Year

Hi! This is my first post on college confidential. I am a few weeks into my sophomore year of high school. I currently go to a below average rurul school with limited options for AP and honors classes. For unrelated reasons, I had to move in with my non custodial parent earlier this summer and am now in the middle of a custody battle. At some point during this year I will have to switch into my dads school district, which is one of the best in the state and offers a wide variety of advanced classes. I don’t know when I will be able to move, but I won’t be able to finish out the year at my old school because my dad is driving me an hour every morning to get me to my old school and is close to losing his job. My question is, will I be able to take honors or AP classes if I transfer mid year? If not, will colleges be understanding or will that be concerning to them? Thank you in advance

It depends upon what is available at your new HS.

College know that kids transfer HS for any number of reasons. They also know that you cannot take what is not offered. Good luck.

Nobody here can answer your question. This is something you need to discuss with the guidance counselors at the school you will transfer into. If you are not allowed to switch into honors/AP classes you can ask the new guidance counselor to briefly discuss the impact of your mid-year transfer on your schedule at the new HS in his/her letter or recommendation to colleges.

You may not be able to get all the honors classes you want.
