I am currently a senior at a small 2A private Catholic high school. I am completely miserable and cannot see any signs of my life improving while I attend this school. I feel like it’s impossible to be happy at my school. Bullying runs rampant, the staff are very condescending and punish people for the most trivial of things, and I quite frankly can’t take it any more. I am considering transferring to the public high school in my district due to these factors, but I am concerned about the ramifications this may have on college. I don’t know whether to go painfully through my current school and finish up with my head down or transfer and have a fresh start, although it may be difficult. So, my main question is that if I transfer mid-semester, will it impact my college career?
I know what you’re talking about. We pulled DD out of a Catholic school three years ago and I was openly snubbed a couple of times for that decision. It was the best thing I ever did for DD in terms of her education, though. I realize we just got unlucky, however, and there are a lot of fine parochial schools out there.
Are you likely to get better letters of recommendation where you are vs. a school that doesn’t know you? Transferring itself won’t hurt your chances, but at this point you might want to wait until your applications are in. Be sure to let the colleges know after you transfer, as they will want to make sure your classes are the same, or at least the same level of rigor.
Transfer… but make sure all your apps and recs are in because it’ll be impossible to get recommendations from your new teachers. Also, befoee you do anything, check with your local HS to see if you can transfer into equivalent classes.
I have applied and been accepted to my dream college, but I don’t know if They would see that as a sign of quitting. My classes at the private school I currently attend are somewhat rigorous compared to the local public school
What’s your current schedule?
have you been admitted rolling admissions to your state’s flagship?
No. I’ve been accepted to an out of state college. My current schedule is mostly concurrent college credit classes with my regular high school classes being: Physics, Theology, Government, Band, and advanced art
I assume you’d continue with dual enrollment in the Spring, so all you have to do is check whether you can take Physics, Government, and Advanced Art at the public high school. Theology won’t be offered nor will it be mandatory (although you could see if they offer a semester-long philosophy course). Band… will depend on the band and the band director.
Can your parents afford the OOS college from savings and income? Have you received your financial aid package yet?
Since you are in the middle of senior year, if you transferred, what courses could you get into?
Like if you are in AP Calc, you could continue, But if you wanted to get into an AP class but weren’t in one, could you?
of if you are in Honor English now, is there a spot in the honors english classes?
You would have to talk to your junior year teachers to do recommendations.
I (and your parents) would ask for a meeting at the HS you want to transfer to and see what classes you could take if you transferred. That might help you.
