Hello, I am currently a community college student, looking to transfer to a UC. I have taken 10 classes so far, and have a 3.9 GPA. Most of these classes are in computer science (my intended major). I am wondering if I would be able to transfer to any UC’s right now without the general education done, just some classes for my major.
Also, if I want to transfer to a UC, should I be completing the IGETC or the ASSIST classes?
You need 60 semester/90 quarter units completed by Spring prior to transferring. You need to complete all required courses listed on assist.org including GE’s. IGETC is not required for many Engineering majors which CS may fall under but refer to assist.org.
"2. Complete the following course pattern requirements:
Two transferable college courses (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units each) in English composition
One transferable college course (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units) in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning;
Four transferable college courses (3 semester or 4-5 quarter units each) chosen from at least two of the following subject areas:
the arts and humanities
the social and behavioral sciences
the physical and biological sciences"
Privates still have GE requirements for transfer but many take Sophomore level transfers like USC. See below:
GENERAL EDUCATION CORE LITERACY REQUIREMENTS:
Students are required to take 8 courses from 6 GE Core Literacy areas. Students may fulfill any GE Core Literacy Requirement with transfer coursework taken before starting USC, but are required to take at least two GE Core Literacy courses from the Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences after starting at USC.
IGETC is not recommended for students pursuing high-unit majors or majors like CS. It is highly recommended (read: do it!!!) that you finish all GE’s and every major class available to you at your CC!
