Transferring to Barnard with mediocre high school grades

I’m a sophmore in a community college in New York and am strongly considering applying to Barnard (and by that, I sort of mean I am obsessed with the place) as a Theatre major or an English Major with a theater concentration with a possible minor in women’s studies or african studies or human rights. (still deciding)

I have a 3.7 gpa in the Honors Program at my school, am the vice-president of the Hillel Club, President of the Femenist club, am an editor for an upcoming national literature magazine, have written for the school newspaper, been involved in plays on campus, and am doing an independent study voluntarily (for no credits) on Milton. I also tutor at the Writing Center at my school and work part time as a waitress outside of school.

In high school, my theatre involvement was outstanding…I participated in community theatre, school theatre, and competitions. I also took acting classes outside of school, and in college.

I was a pretty mediocre student in high school (academically). I excelled in the classes I enjoyed, but did not do so well in math and science…also particularly bad when I did not get along with my teachers. My SAT scores in high school were also VERY mediocre, and i never took the ACT because I was (and still am) opposed to standardized testing.

Basically, I am wondering how my prospects are looking considering my poor high school performance? (from a current Barnard student hopefully) I am very proud of my improvement since high school, and I’ve learned that I am much more of an academic then I ever expected, but I am worried that my high school laziness will bring me down. Any suggestions?

I’m not an authority on this by any means but I feel like your college work is going to be more important to them since it is more recent. Work hard on your essays, I feel like this is a place that actually reads them. If the questions are the same as last year there is one about how being in college has played a part in your personal or academic development…perfect place to talk about what you wrote about in your post
