Transferring to Berkeley/UCLA. What will it take?

@Mastodon97 Okay that just confuses me. What would you do in my situation? :expressionless: Also, UCB/UCLA arenā€™t the only colleges I will be trying to transfer to.

Hereā€™s a full list of Universities I will be applying to as a transfer student:
Stanford
Carnegie Mellon University
University of Pennsylvania
Cornell University
Rice University
University of California, Berkeley
University of California, Los Angeles
University of Southern California
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
University of California, San Diego
University of California, Santa Barbara
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
University of Texas, Austin

In terms of berkeley admits, something like 93% of all transfer admits are from a CCC, the next group are in state CA and intā€™l. Bottom of the barrel are OOS transfers. About 2.5% ?? (I canā€™t recall exact number, just guessing). Plus, thereā€™s the difficult issue of correctly matching coursework. They may be more accepting of OOS than other UCs, I do not know, and maybe highly unlikely is too extreme a phrase, so Iā€™ll say pretty unlikely (all things being equal), although certainly not impossible

@lindyk8 Matching coursework can be a real problem indeed. But thatā€™s just percentage of people applying.

People from CCC were literally planning to go to a top UC so thatā€™s why most of them apply, but does that really mean they would prefer a CCC student over an OOS student with similar resume?

@lindyk8ā€Œ Do you have a source for that? Because even for UCLA(a school that is very biased towards CC students)oos transfers arenā€™t that low: https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14.htm

Hereā€™s the 94% from CCC. I will look for other stats. I could be slightly off, but not by much. Thereā€™s only 6% left.

Here is UCSC (not UCB) but new transfers fall 2013:
OOS, 0.5%
intā€™l, 0.4%

First of all, I donā€™t know what you mean when Wisconsin life is better than Irvine. I live around Wisconsin and I can tell you I would much rather live in Southern California than in Wisconsin. Itā€™s very boring and cold! Madison isnā€™t really that great of a city. But I guess to each to his own.

If your #1 pick is Berkeley, then you should pick UC Irvine no doubt. Itā€™s a great school and it will be easier to transfer than if you go to Wisconsin as far as course credits go.

Also a word about the schools you want to transfer to, you should know that Stanford is an extremely insane reach for just about anyone. They have about 10 transfer seats for a couple thousand applicants. USC is a VERY easy school to transfer so that could be your safety (seriously look at the transfer threads throughout the years they accept just about anyone!). Iā€™m not sure why you want you to UC Santa Barbara or UIUC as those arenā€™t as highly ranked as either Wisconsin or UC Irvine? Hope this helps

I was off regarding intā€™l/in-state vs OOS.
But the stats for fall 2014 transfers, Berkeley:
Of 3825 admitted transfers, 55 were from 4-yr OOS.

So thatā€™s about 1.5%.

@lindyk8ā€Œ
How many transfer student applications were there in total? I canā€™t find that number. Because if you add both OOS numbers (they are relatively in the same category) it is about 100 acceptance which is pretty good.

@Mastodon97ā€Œ I want UIUC because itā€™s one of the very best for computer science.

And I want UCSB because it has much better social life than Irvine.

You are 100% right, @mastodon97, itā€™s all in the numbers. And not that many apply from OOS. I know itā€™s somewhere. Let me relook.

@Mastodon97 Well. Everyone says that Madison is one of the best college towns and ranks at the top of best places to live in the USA :\

Well, anyhow, I canā€™t find it and itā€™s not worth it, for me anyway, analyzing the minutiae. The point is itā€™s hard for a OOS to transfer successfully to Berkeley.You can define the figures however you want, and certainly people get in. It also would depend on major, I suppose. And another thing, even though the 2-year OOS and 4-year OOS look comparable on that chart (not sure how UCB parses it), usually a community college will get preference over a four-year as the UCs figure youā€™re already at a four-year, be happy.

Of course, certainly try. Iā€™m just noting the climb is uphill.

@lindyk8 Alright so I will surely be considering UC Irvine!

Thanks :smiley:

@derprageā€Œ
You need to give thought to it only in that if someone transfers to a CCC itā€™s just assumed that it will suck, but thereā€™s a bigger purpose as you will definitely end up somewhere else. You mentioned not wanting to really be at UCI. I think any place you apply you should at least be able to feel you could see yourself there for four years if worse came to worse. You mentioned liking Wisconsin better.

Have you considered UCSB or UCSD?

I would almost say consider staying at Wisconsin, even if itā€™s a long shot because at least you like the place.

@lindyk8ā€Œ Thanks, Im interested

@lindyk8 I got rejected from UCSB and I never applied to UCSD (Itā€™s the biggest regret of my life.)
The only issue I had with UCI is the social life.

But then again @Mastodon97 said that Wisconsin isnā€™t that great and the weather really sucks and Madison isnā€™t as good as people say it is.

@derprageā€Œ
Again, itā€™s up to you on how you want to prioritize things. I might be more biased since Iā€™ve lived here a long time and have gotten sick of it, but I would much rather live in Irvine (which is basically in Los Angeles). However I suggest you do your own research and weigh the pros and cons of each place and make a decision.

@derprage are you a CA resident?

@lindyk8 I am an international student. Hence the impulsive need to go to a top university.

@Mastodon97 I really do hate the weather. Itā€™s literally my dream to work in California.

But then again Irvine isnā€™t nearly as prestigious as Wisconsin. :expressionless:
