Transferring to Berkeley/UCLA. What will it take?

Hey guys!

I fucked up my life by choosing Computer Science as my major (aka reject everywhere because I am an ORM).
I want to transfer to Berkeley/UCLA by choosing a less competitive major. (Please suggest easy to get majors)

What can I do to maximize my chances?
I am ready to do whatever it takes.

Also, I am an international student and I have been admitted to only one University of California = UCI.
I will attend Irvine if and only if it means that it would be easier to transfer to Berkeley/UCLA.

Otherwise I plan to attend the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Please help me plan out my next year. I don’t want to graduate from a 2nd Tier or lower University.
Thanks!

First of all it is definitely easier to transfer from UC to UC than from out of state. It is basically a rule that they have. I am also looking to transfer to Berkeley as a junior and I know it will be harder for me because I will be applying out of state.

To maximize your chances you will have to do basically what you did for the past years, but preferably better (stellar GPA, Extra circulars). Colleges will want to see you start narrowing down your interests, so do activities related to your major.

You can see the easiest major to in to Berkeley here: http://students.berkeley.edu/files/admissions/12626_5.info_transadm.pdf

@Mastodon97 Would you say it’s worth going to UC Irvine over UWisconsin just for the higher chance at transferring to Berkeley?

@derprage Absolutely, not only will UC Irvine be an easier college to transfer to Berkeley than Wisconsin, it is also a higher ranked school than the University of Wisconsin. This is how the UC’s prioritize transfers:
Community College transfers > University of California/CalState transfers > Out of state transfers

@Mastodon97 Thank you! I will think about it

UW Madison is a very good school, regardless of what the mostly arbitrary rankings say. Berkeley is a hard school to transfer to, and that’s something that should be kept in mind.

None of the universities that have been mentioned here are “2nd tier or lower.” Including UC Irvine…which is also an excellent school.

You will likely to succeed graduate from any of the schools you mentioned, Madison included.

@comfortablycurt @artloversplus I will likely succeed at Penn State too. But I am not going to Penn State am I? Rankings matter. Prestige Matters. Going to college is a big thing for me, and I want to have a great school as my alma mater. I need to be proud of my school.

So please tell me how to successfully transfer to a great school. Also, Berkeley is not only a hard school to transfer to, it’s also a hard school to get in as a freshman. Everything is hard. Nothing’s easy. I am ready to take the tough road.

@derprage‌ Absolutely agree with you. Also Berkeley is a hard school to transfer to, but not as hard as the top schools. I think their overall acceptance rate is 30%.

@Mastodon97 what is your major?

@derprage I will be applying as a Philosophy major to the Arts and Humanities school at the College of Letters and Science. That is the school with the highest acceptance rate at 42%.

@Mastodon97 hahahahaha. YOU IN FOR SURE BRO B-|

Like are you actually interested in Philosophy or are you scamming your way in? :stuck_out_tongue:

@comfortablycurt As much as I’d love to lie myself into thinking these are Top-Tier Universities… They are not -.-

UC Irvine is top tier?
then what is UCLA or UCB?

@derprage‌ Haha I’m actually interested in Philosophy! As you might tell from my profile pic I am pre-law. I would rather study political science, but the acceptance rate for that is 23%. Both are fields I am interested in though!

@Mastodon97 Well I guess you’re set mate  I really hope you get into Harvard Law School!

@derprage‌ Thanks! Good luck with Berkeley!

Transferring from UCI to UCB is the easier of the two - way easier.

@lindyk8 Yes I agree. But what if I fail to transfer for x reason? Looking at the worst case scenario, graduating from University of California, Irvine doesn’t seem better than graduating from University of Wisconsin, Madison. Also, life at Wisconsin is 10511589251 times better than life at UCI.

How to decide :\

The facts are that transferring to berkeley from UW is extremely unlikely. So, it just depends. Yeah, there’s no guarantee you’d get in from UCI, either.

@lindyk8‌ Whoa, I wouldn’t go as far as to say “extremely unlikely”. It’s just harder. Plus, with Berkeley it’s actually easier to transfer to than other UCs out of state because it’s are such an elite school and they get so many transfer applicants, they are less biased than the other UCs from what institutions a transfer is coming from.
