The admissions process hasn’t been very favorable to me this.
Nevertheless, I wish to transfer to either UCB/UCLA/UCSD (and a dozen other top universities) from the Universities I have been accepted to.
I have also been accepted to UCI, but there’s no way I plan to graduate from there. I read on the UCLA website that they give top priority to UC/Community college students? Does this mean that it would be exceptionally hard for me to transfer to a UC from a non-UC university?
I would consider enrolling at UCI if and ONLY if it’s significantly easier to transfer from UCI to UCLA (and UCB/UCSD) than from another University (like Wisconsin/Washington/Purdue).
It is not easy to transfer into UCLA/UCB from another 4 year college even if you are transferring from a UC. CC students get the majority of seats then inter UC students then students from other schools. UCLA for example has published data on its transfer students profile and if you google it gives you a very good break down on where students are applying from. For 2014 84 UCI students put in transfer applications and only 17 gained admission, so it is competitive. Total out of 690 UC transfer apps only 150 gained admission. Here is the link: (UCLA transfer stats)
@KaRU since I am an International Student, this wouldn’t be an option for me. UCLA/UCB aren’t the only Universities I will be trying to transfer, I will be applying to around a dozen top colleges.
So should I go to Irvine or should I go to whichever is my favorite university since it doesn’t really matter?
Well UC-UC transfer might be a little bit better in terms of coursework (having your credits/class transfer over) instead of going through the process by transferring from an outside university. I would suggest going to Irvine if the end goal is to go to UCLA/UCB.
Also in general sense transferring from four year to four year universities can be difficult. There are no set guidelines and you could forced to repeat courses that you have taken.
@KaRU Well. There’s no way in hell I would graduate from Irvine so say if my transfer was unsuccessful, I can’t let myself screw my life over right?
Otherwise I would be attending the University of Wisconsin, Madison so it’s a pretty tough decision for me. UCLA/UCB aren’t the only schools I would be trying to transfer to either.
I just want to study at a top college, that’s all.
It all depends. Wisconsin is a great school and no doubt you can get a fantastic education there. But transferring like I said can be a long process no matter what school is involved. What do you want to major in?
@KaRU I want to major in Computer Science but really if it’s from a top college, I am ready to give up my major because it’s insanely competitive to get in. I need the exposure that’s available at a top college more than I want to study Computer Science.
You should not give up what you want to study based on the fact that it is competitive to get into CS at the schools you have applied to. Keep your options open, yes it may be difficult at UCLA/ UBC or Wisconsin for that matter but it sound like it is what you want to do.
You can get that same exposure at schools that might not be as recognized but have very good CS departments. Reach out to these universities career services and see what companies recruit of campus, give out internships and so forth. What is your plan right now? What do you want to do
@KaRU To be honest, my goal in life is to begin a company and for that , technically, I don’t require an education at all I can get myself to enjoy any subject whatsoever.
This is why I want to be at a place with smart-ass people so I can exploit nerds and generate amazing ideas. It’s really the environment that I want. I can study anything.
Right now my plan is to go to Wisconsin most probably and try to transfer to a better university with a 4.0 GPA. (I am going to begin studying my college courses right now, 5 months before college actually begins)
Go for it, take a chance maybe you will love Wisconsin (great school, top 50 in the country). And its good to know that you enjoy what you put your mind to (know a few people who are miserable). It sounds like you a have a good head on your shoulders and you know what to do. I would advise to transfer if you have a good secondary school record after your freshman year.
If you never wanted to graduate from UCI, then why did you even bother applying there?
Your best bet is to transfer from a community college. If you want to transfer to UCLA for Com Sci, you basically need a 4.0 GPA and the chances you do that at a UC is not likely.
