Transferring to Brown or Davidson?

Kind of got a dilemma on my hands.

Got into Brown for Spring semester, and Davidson in the fall. I'm going premed. Would it be worth waiting for Brown, assuming that my ultimate goals are to get into a good med school and have some fun in college?

yes, most definitely. brown has one of the best pre-med programs in that it has really good advising and the work load is manageable in comparison to other schools. And of course, brown is known for fun. otoh, davidson has a very good pre-med program as well.

Either can get you into a good medical school. You’d do well to choose based on other factors…the two are very different.

I have a daughter who was planning to apply to Brown and Davidson, but got into her EA school and called off the rest of her apps. Last year, I responded to a mom whose daughter - an artsy type like my daughter - had a Brown-Davidson decision and was looking for input. I offered to pose the question to my daughter, who responded as follows:

"It would be hard to qualitatively rank the two in the arts/culture area, because my impression was that both schools are really active with cultural and arts stuff, but the very different overall flavors of the schools kind of makes their arts scenes a little different.

"Brown in general is very activist-y and on their feet about everything, so the arts scene kinda carries on in the same spirit. Remember they have that a capella group which dressed up like pirates and runs around pillaging and crashing all of the other a capella groups that try to be cool. When we went on the admissions tour we saw a tree hung with dozens of pairs of boots, and the guide said, oh, that must be some kind of art project. I think Brown likes to be loud and proud with everything they do, so everything ends up being a little more in your face.

"Davidson on the other hand is a little classier, a little more chill, but remember when we went we saw the Royal Shakespeare Company, which comes for a residency every two years and interacts with students the whole time. They have amazing theatre/music/art facilities, and all the arts faculty we met with were highly enthusiastic / qualified. As far as the local setting, I’d think Providence probably has a little more to offer, but I’m not really qualified to assess all that… All that being said, being the artsy person I am, I kept saying that Davidson would have been my top choice after the school I ended up picking.

“And they do your laundry for you…and deliver cookies to you. Pick Davidson…I fell in love with it too.”

I love Davidson too - though I believe the Mom’s daughter wound up choosing Brown.

I love Davidson, you should go there

If you can’t do laundry, go to Davidson b/c they have maids that will do your laundry for you!

all valid points. I’m leaning in Davidson’s direction because of the smaller classes and more conservative tinge already, but we’ll see. any more thoughts would also be appreciated.

Congratulations… I can’t think of two better schools to be choosing between. Gadad did a great job summarizing the culture of the schools. I know Davidson better and love what they choose to do as a school.

The laundry thing often comes up – but the reasoning behind it speaks volumes about Davidson. It’s not a maid service; it’s a gift of time. Davidson expects that every student admitted is capable of great things if given the right support and so they will go to no end to help you accomplish what is important to you. The laundry service is symbolic of how important your time at Davidson is – they would much prefer that you engage with your professors and fellow students (and yes having some fun) than spending your time doing laundry.

As far as Pre-med at Davidson, you will find that it is just like everything else – they will give you every possible resource to succeed – Last time I checked they have an outrageously high Med School acceptance rate.

PS: one thing that Davidson has no control over but works in their favor; is that most people find it a lot more pleasant walking around a sunny green campus in February than dealing with mounds of snow and ice…

All I can say on this is my freshman roommate at Brown was a legacy admit at Davidson and him and his father had no hesitations about him coming to Brown.

They’re both great places, but they’re both pretty unique. I’d imagine a visit at each should have demonstrated the clear cultural differences and make the choice easy.

^^^ They’re certainly different campus cultures, but I wouldn’t suggest that you use the rubric of “I see myself as liberal so I’ll choose Brown” or “I see myself as more conservative so I’ll choose Davidson.” In fact, if you see yourself as particularly conservative, that would be, IMO, a good reason to choose Brown, and vice versa for liberal - Davidson.

thanks a lot again guys. my only reservations about davidson are the grade deflation stories (not sure how accurate this is, judging by the somewhat lower caliber of students at davidson than at brown) and med school recognition in the northeast. Anyone know if med schools recognize the lower GPAs at davidson like the schools below the mason dixon line (I know 3 kids from davidson got into duke med outright this year, but haven’t heard of any acceptances at a cornell/hopkins/nyu med program).

yeah Davidson is notorious for grade delation. Davidson isn’t a joke and you won’t be the smartest kid in any of your classes. However, this should not be a concern, grade deflation can only push you to try harder for that A

thanks man. do you go to davidson? Any idea how hard it is compared to, say, a school like georgetown (where I went freshman year)?

I vote for Brown!

I do not go to Davidson but I did do some research into the school junior year (well actually I’ve looked at 200 schools before I decided on 10 haha).

I’ve heard that Davidson students spend A LOT of time studying, more than some of the good schools such as Georgetown
