Hi everyone,

I've been doing some searching around the fourms, and it seems that many people who apply to BU, also apply to Northeastern as a safety school. I'm applying to both this month for January admission, so I'd be grateful if some of you could comment on what you think of my chances. I'm not too concerned with which school I get in to, because I just really want to get out of Ohio and into Boston - I love it there! Here we go:

High School Stats (not stellar, not terrible):

-Graduated from a private high school in 2005
-Took quite a few honors courses, AP English, AP US History
-Never took the AP tests
-GPA ended up being a 2.9
-Class ranking in the bottom 50% (vague, I know)
-1210 SAT (600 Math, 610 Verbal)

College Stats:
-I'm in my junior year at Bowling Green State University in Ohio
-74 credit hours accumulated, thus far
-Cumulative GPA of 3.4
-I was a philosophy major my first two years, have almost enough credits for a major in Phil
-Switched to computer science this summer, and taking my first CS course this semester (yes, quite a switch from philosophy!)
-I've been active since my freshman year with the Physics/Astronomy Dept. doing working at the observatory and planetarium doing research (astronomy is a hobby) - have a really good letter of rec. coming because of this
-I'm a resident advisor
-Trouble free my entire life

I probably put some irrelevant info in there somewhere, but I just thought I'd list what I could. What are my chances at BU, and am I a "shoe in" for Northeastern? I plan on applying as a computer science major to both schools, if that makes a difference.

Thanks much!

CPE, ironically I went to BG last year and applied to transfer to both BU and Northeastern. I had a 3.2 GPA in the journalism program, although I was only there for a year. My HS record was much worse then yours, although it probably wont matter, as you have so many credits. I ended up getting rejected by BU and getting into Northeastern, although I attended neither. Just wondering what is it that is making you want to leave BG?

Hi j,

That's cool that you went to BG! I suppose you could say that I'm content with BGSU for the most part, but after recently seeing other schools out there, I came to the realization that I really want to get out and make the most of my undergrad years. Not so much in regards to academics, but more so socially and "spiritually," I guess you would call it. I've been to Boston twice in the past two years, and each time I've fallen in love with the city and the setting. I'm not so concerned about where I get my degree from, which is why I don't really care if I go to NEU or BU. Either way, I'm in Air Force ROTC and will transfer into the AFROTC detachment for BU/NEU, so I'll become a military officer after I graduate and won't need to use my computer science degree right away because I hope to go to flight school.

I'm slightly worried about Northeastern at the moment, only because they require midterm grades to be sent, and because of various committments such as my job as a resident advisor and AFROTC, I haven't had as much time for my classes as I'd like, so I might have a C on there. Where did you transfer to?

All the best,

CPE

Yea, I can relate to the whole social scene at BG not being so great. I'm not from the area (from upstate NY), so it was sort of a culture shock coming to a rural location like BG. I also wasn't a big fan of how so many people went home on weekends and the such.

Regarding Northeastern and BU, I personally liked Northeastern better. While it is in the city and you get all the perks of city living, it seems to have its own little corner. You wouldnt think that you were in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the country if you were walking around campus. BU on the other hand, feels like it is smack dab in the middle of the city, which I personally was not a fan of. I ended up transfering to the University of Maryland, but I would have went to Northeastern had I not got in at UMD.

As for the grades you should have any problem. Last year the average transfer GPA was a 3.21. I had a 3.2 for the whole year and I got in. If nothing else, you will be able to at leastexplain the slip up in grades in the essay.

Thats cool, I might apply there to northeastern as well, if only it wasnt so expensive

Just a comment... a lot of people apply to both NU and BU, but really, people usually don't like both of them, obviously just make sure to visit, liking one school doesn't mean you'll like the other. People tend to love BU and hate NU, or love NU and hate BU. They're very different schools, a very different student body, a very different campus.

I go to northeastern, and I'd tell you how much better it is than BU... but I'll just keep my biased mouth shut.

Anyway, I think you have a good shot at Northeastern as a transfer... shouldn't be too difficult.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

For future readers: I was accepted to both schools. I put considerable effort into my essays, which may have helped. Good luck!
