I applied for Fall 2013 to the University of Michigan and was denied with a 3.88 college GPA and 16 completed credits. Right now, I am in my sophomore year at Western Michigan University and I have 36 completed credits now. 31 from WMU with a 3.875 and 5 credits from KVCC (over the summer) with a 4.0. I just updated my application and sent in August 30th for Winter 2014. I am wanting to know my chances!

HS Stats:
GPA: 3.16/3.29 W
ACT: 23
EC's: choir for 4 years.
My first two years really messed me up, but my last two years my grades increased significantly and my last four semester of HS were 3.7-4.1 GPA

I wrote an additional essay about how I was bullied in high school and how it affected me academically. I also updated my application and added an additional essay about my foreign exchange student, and also added three letters of recommendation from 2 professors and hs teacher.

College EC's: soloist in a NSA a capella group, member in AMSA, invited to Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society, student in honors college (but not taking any honors courses at the moment), sales associate at Old Navy, and PR (volunteer) at Borgess Hospital.

PLEASE help me out with my chances. I know have a fairly low amount of credits, but if I were to be admitted, I would have 54 incoming credits. I also have taken 4 spanish classes if that helps? It is my DREAM to go here. Please help me calm down while I wait these next 7 weeks for an answer, and give me an honest opinion!

Hey,
I actually just applied to the WMU OT program as well. I also applied last year and was sadly denied.
My overall GPA is a 3.3
my last 60 GPA is a 3.85
my prereq GPA is a 3.85
I have shadowed OT’s in 3 different settings for a total of 100 hours.
I have about 1,000 hours of work/volunteer experience.

I’d say that their program is extremely competative and hard to get into. I’m not really sure what they are looking for in their applicants… they get about 200-300 applicants and only accept about 30. It’s definitely tough. They definitely weigh your GPA heavily. i have heard that if you don’t at least have a 3.4 GPA, they toss your application to the side, mind you this is not a fact, I’ve just heard this from many other applicants.
Also, I think it is a big deal to have as much OT observation hours as possible. Did you finish any hours for your application?

I am also wondering how you were able to send in all of these extra essays, etc. The first page of WMU’s application makes you check several boxes. One of the boxes states that we aren’t allowed to send in any additional items that aren’t on the application such as resumes, extra essays, etc. and then we had to sign it following checking the boxes off.

Good luck I hope you get in!! I’m definitely praying long and hard that I get in this year, I’ve tried so hard but no luck yet!

Oh, I read your post wrong. You have a great GPA thus far in college! I think you probably have a good chance of getting in. That is if you have OT observation hours. I hear they really look for applicants that have shadowed 3 different OT’s in 3 different settings. I really don’t think they look at your HS GPA or ACT at all, I haven’t heard anything about that being weighed into their choices.

Hey, I am at WMU right now as an undergrad sophomore. I am trying to get into UofM LSA. I am wondering what my chances are for getting into Michigan with only 36 completed credits. I am not applying to an OT program or anything like that, just LSA. Haha, but you’re fine!

Good luck to you though for getting into WMU’s OT program if that is what you’re going for!

oh believe me, i know that act score is ridiculous. the sad part is that i retook the test over and over again. I sent in my 21 score too because it had my writing on it which i got an 8 on. that’s why i absolutely hate the ACT. it doesn’t test your ability to do well in school. infact, EVERYTHING on the stupid ACT was so easy. what screwed me over was that it was timed, and i have terrible anxiety. i never finished one section completely.

intelligence is not about how fast you can take a test and ace it. some people bubble in patterns and do better than i do. it’s how much you study in school and how much you comprehend. the ACT said i wasn’t ready for college, and look where i am. a science major with a 3.87. so suck it, ACT! hahaha
