it is much harder to transfer into MIT than it is to get in as a freshman.

anoyne for my second question

Just do as much as you can, as well as you can. Research if you can manage it, something else if you can't do research as a freshman. Just don't be lazy and sit around, or go out and party a lot; that's not quite what MIT is looking for.

I wont party, it's just, I am very interested in MIT and know I could do well...

im pretty smart, but didnt try early on in hs 9,10..
wasnt involved in much except chess and my own astronomy.

I kinda went up down and up in life...as a child I almost skipped 2 grades but my parents didnt want me to because I played football... then playing football I started hanging out with the "cool" crowd at my public school, and didnt learn much in school. My friends recently started doing drugs and partying and im not really into that so I kinda went on a soul search this past year and figured out that my love for physics and astronomy has always been fighting its way out, and that a physisist is who I truley am. Even thought i havnt tried in HS i managed a 3.6uw and a 34 act( 35M 36S 34E 30R) and SAT 800M but 630CR
my SAT II are 780 math IIC and 800 physics and 750 biology M (Just recently took all these test in Nov and Dec, sat is from june)... my senior grades are high

I know that this wont get me into MIT, test r ok, grades low, EC's not spectacular, and even tho I am a very accomplished chess player, ranking( 1930 on yahoo if anyone wants to play after college app month) I have yet to join USCF

So if my freshman year I go to a state college or some private school, maintain a 4.0, do some physics stuff, research if possible, pursue my chess, and astronomy, get active in the community would that get me in, cuz either way i plan on doing this, but if I had to do anything off the wall I would.

Don't discount your chances, you look like you have a fair chance to me. Make sure your essays are really good and really show your passion for science and the such, and you probably have just as good a chance as anyone.

Make sure you take the equivalent of the MIT freshman courses during your freshman year -- Physics (mechanics and E&M), calculus (single- and multivariable), chemistry, and maybe biology. Taking further science courses would also be a plus.

And you know, get good grades and all that "duh" stuff. :)

lol yea the duh stuff just didnt get to me untill now, but thank you...

Im not going to get my hopes up but ive written pretty good essays, me thinks ;)

hopefull i can squeek my way in, if not than, I will work hard and do the duh stuff ;)

Thank you guys

Make sure you have a solid Plan B. I looked up MIT transfer admit rates recently for another student. In the recent year I found, they only admitted 3 transfers out of several hundred who applied. They have plenty of warm bodies (they have been overenrolled for 3 years in a row), and there are not that many students who drop out. They are only going to accept a transfer who is so extraordinary that they add something truly unique to the students who are already there. Merely getting good grades in standard freshman classes is probably not going to be enough.

make a time machine!

lol

On a serious note, I think that you will have to do something extremely unique to get in. Maybe some great artwork, invent something awsome, or work with some astrophysicist and find some new stuff.

dang :( ,, well if I can do research I will, but dang lol

o well...

ok so, if I am a little young for my grade would skipping college and doing something and then applying as a freshman help my chances of gettin in or would I again have to paint a mona lisa or find a alien colony

well, the admit rate for transfers is about 1% and the admit rate for freshman is something like 12-14%, so applying as a freshman is definitely better odds. But an awful lot of pretty stellar freshman applicants still don't get in. Go read through some of the posts by people who did nor did not get in for some feel for your chances. Normally, you would only be out the $60 (or whatever it is) application fee to give it a chance. Taking a year off is a much bigger investment for odds that are still pretty long. If you take a year off and still end up at a college that you could have started a year earlier, would that be okay with you?

prlly not o well i will try to get in this yer 1/1000% and next year 1/10000% and the next

I asked Ben the same question. He told me that they accept less than 10 people for transferring.

A little heads-up about your chess "accomplishments"; your Yahoo! rating means nothing, since it is not only low (relatively speaking), but can easily be obtained via cheating.

Since you are unrated for both USCF and FIDE, you don't have any concrete proof of being accomplished in chess.

Furthermore, realize that MIT has a very good chess team, and if the 1930 Yahoo! rating is any indication, their members are all significantly stronger than you.

Ok and when did I say I was being recruited for chess or anything.
My whole point was that I dont have a lot of shiz that Ive done except play chess, and mind you I am a highschool student, and I just started playing four years ago, I would think i would have room for improvment. Last year a former chess master came to our school as a sub, and although he said he doesnt play seriously anymore his USCF rating was still 2120. I played him every day after school that week and went 4-5-2, so I would say my rating is 'pretty' accurate.

And I dont cheat on yahoo, and that ranking is after playing 230 games so its not really completed perse.

And if everyone cheats on their wouldnt it be harder to get your rating up. and what are you relatively speaking to 1930 is pretty high for yahoo Id think.

Since you are unrated for both USCF and FIDE, you don't have any concrete proof
of being accomplished in chess.

Your right, and I am going to join. and maybe your right i shouldnt have said accomplished but rather, good for my area.

Furthermore, realize that MIT has a very good chess team, and if the 1930 Yahoo!
rating is any indication, their members are all significantly stronger than you.

Your right and I never said I would play on the team, but couldnt I still partake in the club. or improve and possible play in

o yea and i meant accomplished as in -skilled wihch I think is fair to say I am as in the average tournament players(aka serious players) ranking is only 1200 and I have beaten a 1700 from another school and the chess master that came to our school, I think i can say Im accomplished. IDK where your genius self is getting that I have and accomplishments,

Your a Cal-tech student ,, yea real smart to twist words

GracieLegend you seem pretty knowledgeable about the MIT team. do you know where/how i can contact them? im an ea admit and im pullin a ~1900 USCF, and I just wanna know if im strong enough to make their team

you only a senior in highschool,,, you can and will get better

im guessing most poeple on the team are pulling 2100+ with a high of somewhere around 2500

JSuresh:

Here are the USCF rating breakdowns for the top eight members of last year's team; 2260 b/4 games, 2053 b/11 games, 2035, 1916, 1909, 1867 b/5 games, 1764, and Unrated.

With a rating of 1900, you should be more than good enough to make their team. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to get in contact with their players, sorry about that.

Also, check the following link out;

Scroll down a little for the Caltech-MIT match. (5-3 win in favor of Caltech)

Hey, who knows? If you're decided on MIT, I might meet you in the yearly Caltech-MIT match 17 months from now! (I'm rated about 2000)
