I'm strongly considering applying to transfer to Northwestern. I noticed on their website that they do not require a high school transcript for transfer applicants /U. Would not submitting a high school transcript take away from my application and diminish my chances? In my opinion, my highschool transcript is one of the weaker parts of my application.

Also, I currently attend a top 20 school, how much will this affect the adcom's evaluation of my college grades?

Also, here are my stats (ranges, don't feel comfortable posting precise figures), please feel free to gauge my chances.

HS: SAT score (1550+/1600, 2250+/2400)
Some E.C.s

College: GPA 3.65-3.75 w/ rigorous coursework (currently in fourth semester)
A few E.C.s

Not very significant work experience, though some.

Also, I'd be applying to the College of Arts and Sciences.

If it is not required, then it should not have a negative effect.

MOST of the transfer admits to NU are from other top 4 year universities (lateral transfers).

Your SAT is very strong.
Your college GPA is, eh, I’d say “okay” compared to other NU transfer applicants
Your college ECs could be better.

I would say your college stats are not as strong as your HS stats. Since you are a rising junior applicant, your HS record will have even less weight.

It also depends on what major you are applying for.
Luckily WCAS accepts the most students out of the schools at NU so that should work in your favor.

^I’m not sure I’d say most transfers are from top 4 year universities, but it certainly gives you a leg up if you are. I know students who transferred from Loyola Chicago and the University of Washington-Seattle; good schools but not top schools by any means.

Regarding the OP’s question, if you’re a junior your HS gpa will not matter as much, although most applicants will be sending their HS transcript so they’ll have an advantage there. Aside from that, your SAT scores are off the charts and your college GPA is impressive, considering you’re already at a top 20. That said, I think you’d have a great chance of being admitted, with or without your HS transcript.

I’m also curious as to whether you have already transferred? A poor HS gpa certainly wouldn’t warrant admission to a top 20 straight out of high school. If you’ve already transferred once, your chances of being admitted to NU are slim based on the research I have done. However, I would not discourage you from applying if that was the case.

Thanks for the input. To answer your questions:

I’m majoring in econ and philosophy, so I’ve taken a “tough” courseload relative to other students here (since econ and philosophy are considered difficult subjects here at least).

I didn’t transfer to the school I currently attend, I got in out of high school. My hs grades aren’t “poor” but they’re less impressive than the rest of my application imo-- my school performance was particularly lackluster in freshman and sophomore years. Sending in my HS transcript would not help me, but would not sending it in hurt my chances? You two seemed to disagree on that question.

Oops, let me clarify that:
Over 50% of transfer admits are rising sophomores from 4 year universities. Stated somewhere on their website but since I’m typing from my phone I’m too lazy to look up edit: just 50%? hmmm

If it were me, I would send the HS transcript simply because everyone else does. That’s just my opinion.

You have to submit the HS transcript.

"The following items are required to complete an application:

* Common Application and Northwestern University Supplement
-
Official secondary school transcript(s)*
- Official university transcript(s)
- College Official’s Report
- Academic Professor/Instructor Recommendation
- Required Standardized Test Scores
- Nonrefundable application fee ($65)"

If you got into a Top 20 from HS, I doubt your HS stats are worse than most other applicants.

Augustus, notice there is an asterisk after “Official HS transcripts” and not the other items. If you go on the transfer admission section of their website you will see that the asterisk corresponds to a note: “*A secondary school report is not required.”

The secondary school report is, unless I’m mistaken, a lot like the college official’s report – basically just saying what your high school’s GPA scale was, and what your rank was. You still need to turn in high school transcripts, you just don’t need the secondary school form. (The form I’m talking about is available for download on the common app downloads page, if you want to look at it.)

^ What he said. The secondary school report has nothing to do with the transcript.
