Transferring to Smith College

Hi,

I am considering applying to Smith College (spring 09), as a transfer student. I have heard great things about the school, and I definitely intend to visit in the coming weeks. I am not terribly familiar with their admissions process though. I was hoping to get some advice about my chances for admissions.

These are my stats:

Borough of Manhattan Community College: GPA- 3.95
credits completed: 38
credits in process of completing: 18

Columbia University Summer Session: GPA- 3.67
credits completed: 3 ( I took two courses but one was pass/fail)

High School (graduated 2006): GPA-2.6.....disaster

Extra Curricular Activities:
-I was a note taker at Columbia University this summer for the office of disability services.

I work as jewelry exhibition staff (during sales) at Doyle Auction house

-part time babysitter

financial literacy program; I teach high school students about aspects of finance. More specifically, how it relates to their own lives.

-Teacher Assistant at Upward Bound this summer - a mentoring program-

-I am also planning on being a mentor for freshman at bmcc this semester

-Working on planning debates for Phi Theta Kappa

-Most importantly, ballet! This will be a big part of my application as I went to boarding school (38 hours of dance a week) to be a professional dancer, and took a year off to dance.

Academic Honors:

Deans list all semesters at bmcc
active member of phi theta kappa
selected to be the student representative for BMCC's financial literacy program at a national conference.

Standardized Testing: I am not planning on submitting any since it is optional. It would provide no benefits to my application. Will my lack of standardized testing be harmful?

Thanks for reading my post and I would really appreciate any advice!!!!

You really should do fine. Smith even has several transfer scholarships dedicated to phi theta kappa members. And you might even get to work at the Smith Center on Women and Financial Independence.

Be sure to visit. Interest is strongly considered.

Smith discontinued mandatory SATs after a long period of study in which they found 1) no evidence of a relationship between SAT scores and academic success, and 2) it mitigated against their commitment to economic diversity. It is isn't going to be an issue for you.

You deft. have a shot! will you transfer as a junior standing??
I will apply to smith too for 09 fall as sophomore standing...I'm i will be fine with the academic background, but my ECs are not as excellent as yours. I'm just involved in student government and kind of leadership program(with scholarship) and do the dancing instructor job at my college...Again your ECs are so great!! Does anyone have idea about how smith measure applicants' ECs? Do ECs weight a lot??

gobackto2005 you are so funny. I always think my EC's are bad, since it's like just ballet. I am applying for spring 09 as a 2nd semester sophomore. I don't know how they are with EC's, but I do think that yours are good enough! I am probably going to visit in the coming weeks so I will let you know how it is!

hey rcl268, you are great and awesome!!! Please pm me or msn me after your visit to smith!! I would visit smith in winter break(they offer interview and campus tour at that time :)) And you are riiiite, sat for smith is optional! (what a brilliant college!)
(nodding,) your ECs are great, Columbia's experience and financial literacy program, etc. those are really great!
Good luck to both you and me for smith!! :D
