Transferring to Tulane as a Junior for the Fall 2017 Term

Hi everyone,
I am currently a freshman undergraduate at Tulane so this isn’t entirely applicable to me, but I am asking on behalf of my boyfriend. He is currently a sophomore at a regional university in Florida and wants to apply to Tulane early as a junior transfer for the Fall 2017 term. He has consistently maintained a 4.0 in every semester at his regional university, and is a member of a few clubs like College Democrats, but hasn’t had much time to participate in other extracurriculars because he is a commuter and doesn’t have many opportunities on campus. I have been trying to get him to engage in more extracurriculars, but that’s beside the point.
I know that Tulane factors in things such as high school grades, test scores, and any extracurriculars from high school, but my boyfriend had a very rough familial situation in junior/senior year of high school, and as a result his grades plummeted and he had to drop out of high school (he did enroll in a program where he finished all his core classes, achieved his high school degree, graduated with his former high school’s class, and enrolled in a regional university, NOT a community college). His SAT score is an 1820 out of 2400, likely a result of his familial situation a few years ago.

Will this impact his chances of getting in severely? He’s been excelling in university ever since he enrolled, and has been taking rigorous classes every semester.

If this provides any more information, his major is currently Psychology, but plans to switch to either Philosophy or Political Science.

Sorry to hear about his familial situation. it’s worth a shot, but transferring is always very difficult, and the fact that Tulane has admitted very large classes the past three years does not help matters any. He needs to write a compelling essay as to the value that he would add to the Tulane community. Hopefully his community college courses were rigorous and he could get excellent recs. Any other hooks? Anyway, I hope you are enjoying Tulane and getting the most out of it. Best of luck to your boyfriend.

Thanks for replying! Honestly thought I would not receive much help lol. He’s from a single parent family, his family income bracket is very low (about 20k a year), and he is hispanic, so those are his major hooks. I am also not entirely sure if he is the first generation of his family to attend college, but I know his father (the parent he lives with) did not attend college in the US.

He is an excellent writer too, so I hope that helps. He has a close relationship with his statistics professor and philosophy professor, so I would imagine those two would help him out with recs. Even though the class of 2020 admitted WAY too many people (housing was too overcrowded), I think their transfer website said they take about 175 a year, regardless of how many are admitted as first years.
