Transferring to UC Berkeley after one year at a CC?

So, basically, last year I didn't put a lot of effort into applying because I really wasn't at a point where I cared much about the four year experience. Now, though, I've just started community college and I've watched all of my friends who are on the same level academically as I was go to really good schools and I've realized my tragic mistake.

In high school I took quite a few APs and I passed all of them, so I went into community college with 34 units. I'm taking 12 this semester and plan to take 15 next semester, putting me at 61. By that time I'll have fulfilled the IGETC requirements and I should have the prerequisites to transfer to a UC as a political science major. I guess my question is...is this a thing that happens?

Applications are due November 30th and my semester doesn't end for two weeks after that, so my application will have no grades to show? I seem to have everything I need in progress or done I just don't know how this kind of thing looks on an application.

Yes it happens! Go to your CC’s transfer advisors for further advice. You CAN transfer to a UC in one year but UCB is very selective. Look further down these pages for more info.

A lot of people transfer in one year to UC Berkeley, so you’re not alone. Berkeley doesn’t discriminate against one-year transfer applicants.

Also, you’ll have to update your application in January of 2015. You’ll be asked to post your grades for your Fall 2014 classes. Don’t worry, everyone has to do that and most people’s fall classes don’t end before the application deadline.

Good luck.

@ectomimedbison‌ as both above said, it does happen! Congrats!!! You actually have probably put yourself in a better position to get in, now that you went to a CCC.

You simply enter them as IP and planned. By the time they look at your app your grades will be in from fall. You could be looking at 4.0 if you play your cards right.

Just make sure someone goes over all the APs. They are usually not accepted for major req., meaning you will need to take the major prep courses.

I’m also going to give you one more piece of advice: 61 units is cutting it close because AP credit sometimes gets calculated differently than how you thought. To be on the safe side I would take 15 units ea semester as a safety.

Just make sure the AP credit will transfer. Sometimes UCB will only accept a 4 or 5 for credit.

In high school I had a 3.96.

Well a high school 3.96 doesn’t always cut it with UCB and UCLA. Sad but true… A 3.96 from CCC will get you there.

HS GPA does not matter. What were your AP scores?

I don’t think he was talking about that. He was lamenting not applying direct from high school and I was saying he’s probably in a better position to get in now, so he was just telling me his hs GPA.

My bad, I thought it was mentioned like they were going to put it on the app.

Yeah, I didn’t have the grades to get in coming out of high school, I know that.
AP scores, 5s on U.S. Government and Politics, U.S. History, and English Language and Composition.
4s on Statistics, Macroeconomics, and English Literature and Composition.
3s on Calculus AB, Statistics, and World History.

Great! I was concerned that some wouldn’t transfer, but it looks like you’ll be fine!

Okay great, thank you! I have an appointment to speak to a counselor on Wednesday.

Good luck!

You should remember that you need at least thirty units from CC by the end of spring to be considered as a community college student (higher priority).
I’m a one year transfer too.
