Transferring to UCLA or UCB - but a little worried

Hello - looking for some advice on transferring this upcoming year to ucla or ucb.

I'm looking at a few majors and I would have "most" of the classes done by SPRING 2014.

For example the major "Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology" at UCLA I would have everything done on assist EXCEPT second semester organic chem and third semester physics. The assist.org said its highly recommended but not required to have that done.

Is it basically saying dont bother applying for that major without that class done? I have maintained a 4.0 GPA in all of my other classes and am doing really well coming up this last year of community college so I feel like I'm a competitive student. But will not having this one class completed kill my chances? If so id rather choose a major that I have at least a shot to get in.

Another major im looking into is at berkely "Molecular Environmental Biology"

But I wouldnt have organic chem semester II done for that major before I transfer. I emailed them and they said I could take that during the summer before I attend berkeley. But what are the chances of them allowing me to do that - assist says for that major "exceptions are highly unlikely"

What do I do!!

Thanks

If you called and they explicitly told you that you can take it during summer (for cal), you should be fine. Otherwise, if you do not complete the requirements by Spring prior to transfer you will either not get accepted, or eventually get your admission revoked due to failure of completion.

If I were you, I’d find a major that you can satisfy the requirements by Spring, or plan for another (dreadful) year at community college. Good luck.

Lozzleface is right. If you can’t complete the prerequisites for that major - perhaps, there is another one of interest that you have almost all of them completed.

If you really don’t want to do that class prior to transfer and you’re set on that major then with your GPA I would look into a special action admission for UCLA and/or UCB.

Thanks for replies.

Yeah Cal said that “it may still be worth applying if you have a plan to complete the remaining requirement in the summer between Spring 14 and Fall 14 when you would start at Berkeley- but know that this would be a condition of your admission, contingent upon you passing the course with a certain grade.”

However, this major seems like it may be competitive - so I’m not sure if its even worth applying if there is a very small chance of me getting special permission to do the class during summer.

I emailed UCLA and they said their not allowed to really help me on this subject. However the counselor did they have had students in the past with similar coursework get in as me. But she is not sure how many were rejected that had similar coursework too.

I was admitted to MCDB at UCLA without the second semester of ochem and my GPA was lower than yours (if you have a 4.0), so you should be fine. Recommended means recommended and as long if you’re competitive and have done well in your classes then their seems to be some leniency for UCLA if you miss a few prereqs. Berkeley, on the otherhand is extremely strict on prereqs and missing any is probably going to have an impact on your admission. I was rejected to Berkeley, but admitted to UCLA and the rest of the UC’s and I always assumed my rejection was due to missing that last semester of ochem for Berkeley.

Also, even if you were admitted to Berkeley on the condition you finish ochem during the summer, have you considered how realistic that is? Ochem is a very rigorous course and as such, at least in my experience, usually isn’t offered over the shortened summer terms at most community colleges. Additionally, if anything the first semester is probably more like to be offered than the second. And if you plan to take it at Berkeley or at a UC during the summer, be aware that you won’t receive financial aid and tuition is going to come to a few thousand just for a four unit class, that’s not including housing or other expenses.

Thanks dilapidated,

Did you have physics 1c done? I will have two semesters of physics done, but not the third.

Also - what major did you apply for at berkeley? I dont think I saw MCDB being offered there.

Did you like the program at UCLA? Thanks.
