Transferring to UMDCP, help

Hi, I currently go to Virginia Tech but I live in Maryland. I'm a freshman right now about to finish my first semester. I have a few questions about applying to transfer next Fall. This semester I took 15 credits but had to withdraw from one class, I will be finishing with a GPA of around 3.2-3.5 and 12 credits.
My schedule for next semester is 18 credits and I was wondering what the best time for applying for transfer would be. If I apply before the March 1st deadline will the school consider my grades and credits I am taking Spring semester. Because I think I can boost my gpa next semester, but the decision would come out mid April. However, if I apply near the June 1st deadline I feel like I will have a less of a chance of getting in because of not applying early.
So what I'm asking is, what is the best idea to go with? Apply before March 1st with around a 3.2-3.5 and a W on my transcript, or wait till end of spring semester where I'll have 30 credits completed and possibly a higher GPA.

Also I am transferring because of financial reasons.

I would apply by March. I don’t think it is going to make a difference and may help to be first in line. 3.2-3.5 is not a terrible GPA and so it will not hold you back. I am so sorry about the money issue but you will not be the first or last to have this problem. You might be surprised how many come home this summer and are switching colleges.

Dear vtech94,

Thank you for question that you posted on the UMDCP forum on the College Confidential website. Based on the nature of your situation, I suggest that you either apply to UMD by June 1st for Fall 2013 undergraduate transfer admission or March 1st for Fall 2014 undergraduate transfer admission. Please keep in mind that if you decide to apply to UMD by June 1st, you must make sure that credentials and documents (e.g. UMD Undergraduate Admissions application and fee, college transcripts, and letters of recommendation) are turn in by the deadline. What will happen if one or more piece of document is not turn in by June 1st, UMD will deferred your application and credentials to the next admission cycle which would be the August 2013 deadline for Spring 2014 undergraduate admissions due to many applicants applying by June 1st.

If you decide to apply for priority deadline by March 1st for the Fall 2013 undergraduate admissions, UMD could denied you admission because you do not have 30 credits yet at the time of completing your application and/or denied you because of not completing either the fundamental English or fundamental math requirement. Or they may defer your application to the June 1st deadline to see the course and grade that can satisfy the fundamental English or Math requirement. They would also review the courses that you have taken in your second semester with Virginia Polytechnic State University and how you did during your first years with them overall.

In addition to this, please bear in mind that UMD had revamped their general education requirements which will fully take effect in 2016. You could be placed in the new general education requirement or the existing one known as the CORE, which is slated to be phased out. For more information , please visit [General Education Program - University of Maryland](http://www.gened.umd.edu/about-gened/coretogened.php) . You may be subjected to the new general education requirements.

What I think you should do is contact a pre-transfer adviser for UMD and you can either come on campus through a walk-in basis (still have to make an appointment though.) or arrange an appointment by phone or instant message and they will review your coursework at VT and will inform you of your options. For more information please visit, [University of Maryland - Pre-Transfer Advising Program](http://www.transferadvising.umd.edu/)

I hope this helps. If you have any more questions, please let me know.

Thank you.

Incoming Transfer Student to UMD for Spring 2013

Thank you for the response. I have one more question though. If I apply before the march 1st deadline, do I need to send in my sat scores and college transcripts. Especially if I’m taking 18 credits in the spring. Also if I applied as a freshman, shouldn’t they already have all of that information.

Hello Vtech94,

Thank you for writing.

If you have less than 30 credits at the time of your application when you are applying to UMD, you must send in your high school transcript, test scores and your college transcript. UMD will see the course that you had taken at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the courses that are currently in progress. UMD will mostly evaluate you on how well you did in high school, the academic rigor of the courses that you had taken in high school and your test scores. Even if UMD Undergraduate Admissions has your name and information in their database when you applied for freshman admissions, you still must send your high school transcript and test scores. Some schools keep your credentials from high school for a year and then they remove it from the database.

However, if you have at least or more than 30 credits at the time of your application when you are applying to UMD, you do not need to send in your high school transcript and test scores. UMD will strongly evaluate you on how well you did in your first-year (sometimes two years, if applying as a junior.) of college as well as other credentials (i.e. application essay, extracurricular activities and letters of recommendation).

I hope this helps and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Thank you.
