I am currently a college freshman, and am thinking about applying to University of Miami
(Florida) as a transfer student for my sophomore year. When transferring to UM, if you have 30 College credits or more, then you do not need to provide high school transcripts or SAT scores with your application. I think that by the time my freshman year is over, I should have 30 credits. (15 each semester). They said that a competitive transfer applicant has a GPA of at least 3.4, which seems relatively low for a school of this caliber. I'm shooting for a minimum GPA around 3.6 for my freshman year. But my question is how and when do I apply for a transfer to UM for my sophomore year? Because I think I'm supposed to apply in the middle of my freshman year to start the fall semester at UM for my sophomore year.(could be wrong) But how is this possible if I will be including my 30 college credits in my application? How would I start my sophomore year at UM with the 30 credits from my current college that I obtained during my freshman year? Thanks.

The transfer application for U Miami is due March 1st of this year, so chances are you won’t have completed your spring semester by then. You don’t get to count your second semester units as a part of the 30 units. This means that you would have to send in you SAT scores and high school transcript. If you wanted to apply with all 30 credits, you would have to wait until fall of next year to apply for a junior transfer. If you are admitted this year, and you pass all of your spring classes, you would start your sophomore year with your 30 credits. Don’t worry you still get credit for all the transferable courses you successfully complete even if you aren’t done with the class until after the application is due.

OK thanks for clearing that up. Theres no way I’m applying to UM with my high school transcript and SAT scores, so I’ll have to wait until next year to apply. I’m just looking for a good school that I can transfer to my sophomore year that will heavily weigh my first semester college grades over my high school transcript and SAT scores, because although I will provide a good college transcript, my high school transcript and SAT scores will ruin my application for pretty much any good school. So if you have any recommendations of good school’s to apply to that will put more emphasis on my first semester of college, than my high school stats, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Looking at high school transcripts and SAT scores for sophomore transfer applicants is something you’re going to see pretty much across the board. One semester of grades isn’t a whole lot to judge someone on. If you’re really determined to transfer in one year, I would look at some of the lower tier school as they often have much higher transfer rate. If you going for more prestigious schools, staying at your current college for 2 years would provide you with the strongest possible transfer application.

What that other kid said actually isn’t all that true. You can apply by March first and Miami will wait until you complete both semesters to make a decision. Just like in High School; you apply in November/January but the year isn’t completed yet.
