I just transfered to UMiami from a CC. I transferred in with around a 3.9 and 38 credits. I was accepted at USC-Marshall and UIUC for this semester as well, but decided not to go there because this past spring I had been obsessed with Miami and really wanted to go to school in south florida (for the record, I had only attended community college because I had graduated a semester early and it was just easier to stay there for my freshman year).

Unfortunately, I am not as pleased with UMiami as I thought I would be. It is way too much of a party school for my liking. I feel like I'm the only one who actually studies here, and it kind of sucks. Also, I'm from Chicago, and as much as I wanted to escape the cold, I miss it there terribly.

My plan is, to stick it out until the end of the semester here. By that time, I will have earned 54 credits. I was hoping to possibly take 2 intercourse classes over winter break, which will give me my associates degree so that I can put in an application to Northwestern.

My question is, if I work really hard to maintain the GPA I currently while at UMiami, will I have a solid chance of transferring to Northwestern?? Will the fact that I have transferred before negatively effect their admissions decision??

Also, I am currently a student in the business school at UMiami. Does anyone know how the undergraduate business program works at Northwestern?? I would be willing to switch my major, if needed, to go there (which wouldn't be too big of a deal since I am already taking some communication courses and will have completed all my gen ed requirements, like english, chem, calc, etc.). I really don't care what I have to do to get in, I just really want to get out of Coral Gables.

For the record, I know people may respond saying give UMiami a chance, etc. I intend on doing that and I’m trying to get involved with clubs, etc. However, I can already see that I’m definitely not into the whole Miami environment (South beach, clubbing EVERY night, etc.) and I really want to get back to the midwest.

(I know I’m not being very helpful, but when you say UMiami, you might want to specify Miami of Florida. There’s a University of Miami in Ohio that’s regarded highly for its ability to place students in PHD programs upon graduation.)

I was totally obsessed with Miami after I graduated high school. I’m a CC student now and I’m totally obsessed with U of I. Your grades are really good and considering your rigorous class schedule makes you a very competitive applicant. In my opinion, you should have a good shot at Northwestern but I just really don’t know how competitive it is. Have you thought about transferring to U of I or are you completely against the party scene?

There’s no biz major at northwestern. Most biz-oriented students major in econ or industrial engineering & management sciences. There’s a business institute minor but it has a liberal-arts orientation. Students can apply for Kellogg certificate if they have taken most of the prereqs which are highly quantitative.

<<fightingillini>> Thanks for the stats on Northwestern and Good luck with getting into U of I! I’m not entirely against going there, but it’s just that the reason I decided against that school (apart from the fact that I was obsessed with Miami) was that, being from the northwest suburbs, my ENTIRE high school class went to either U of I or Indiana University. I don’t want to be surrounded by people I went to high school with, even though U of I is an excellent school. Also, nearly every member of my family is a U of I alumni so there has been tons of pressure for me to go there over the years. My family is also incredibly involved with that school, so it would never really feel like “my school” if you know what I mean. I also want to be in the Chicago area since all my friends are there so Urbana is a little far away. </fightingillini>

<<sam lee=“”>> Thanks, I figured I would have to major in something like economics. I’ve gotten A’s in both micro and macro econ, and have completed a lot of core business courses, so that probably wouldn’t be too big of an issue. Would you happen to know how competitive it is to enter Northwestern as an econ major??</sam>

Also, Does anyone know what sort of extra cirriculars Northwestern looks for typically??
