I'm currently a sophomore at NYU Gallatin with a 3.925 GPA and a member of the Dean's honor roll.

In my year and a half at NYU I've been wholly unsatisfied with the education I've received thus far, and am seeking something more challenging. So, I've decided to transfer schools.

I'm writing here because I'm wondering what type of schools I should be aiming for. I have a decent amount of EC's, mediocre SAT scores (1930), and a mediocre HS GPA (3.6). I really want to get the most of my education and have been told by NYU admins that I should apply to schools like Wesleyan, Brown, Williams, UChicago, even Yale.

Does anyone have experience with transferring that can tell me what type of schools I should shoot for? I'm applying as a creative writing student with an interest in Literature and Film and will have a couple of glowing letters of recs from NYU professors who are also published authors.

Let me know if you have any advice or tips.

Thanks so much.

You don’t have to say you were on Deans list if you got a 3.9… it goes without saying.

As someone looking to transfer to NYU, I’m surprised you aren’t happy with the quality of the education, would you mind elaborating? Why did you decide to apply to Gallatin over Tisch if your main interest was Film and writing? Also, you discussed transferring with administrators? Like your advisor?

A 3.6 is not a mediocre HS GPA. A 1930 SAT is not terrible either, but it’s probably lower than what top schools are looking for.

The thing is, you’re at NYU, which has excellent programs in creative writing and Film. The only Film program I can think of that might be better is USC, but really I think it’s on a similar level as NYU.

Simply, it isn’t for me. NYU is an incredibly impersonal place where the administration doesn’t know basically anything about you. I went to Gallatin because I wanted to be able to study a variety of things and if you’re in Tisch they choose basically every course for you. So, I wouldn’t be able to study non-film related creative writing.

My Gallatin adviser (who attended NYU’s Cinema Studies PHD program) was the one who encouraged me to transfer because he shared many of the same issues with the curriculum and teaching styles that I do.

The courses have all felt pretty remedial and much like High School. You’re either in a gigantic lecture class or in small, supposedly intimate classes in which the discussions and assignments are, well, tedious and frustrating.

I’m not saying NYU is bad by any means. I’m just seeking a better liberal arts education.

Hope this helps.

if you’re looking to transfer as a junior, then high school grades and scores will not matter that much. You have a stellar gpa and have a great shot at all of the schools listed assuming you have great extracurriculars. Just be honest and clear on your transfer essays and you will be fine :)
