Transferring with Cal Grants

So I'm at a CC doing cal grants and I'm transferring this fall. How does it work if the cal grants settings are set to my CC for the past two years and I'm going to a 4-year during the fall? I already filed for fafsa with the 4-year I'm planning to go to as my first choice. Will cal grant recognize that and change my schools? Because when I try to click change schools for cal grant, it gives me an error about how I can't change the schools yet.

And if anyone is wondering, my parents did my fafsa and activated cal grants when I was a senior in hs so I got stuck with it, though I'm planning to graduate within the 4 year limit so it works out.

Thanks!

@xxcapital - If you already have been awarded the Cal Grant from a previous year all you need to do to renew or accept it is wait until after March 2nd and submit the school change on the CSAC website that is currently giving you the error message. After doing this it should provide you the award details and they will be forwarded to each of the schools you applied to so they can put it in your financial aid package.

When are we transfer applicants supposed to change schools on the cal grant website? After we SIR to whatever school we want to attend? Or when school starts…or? I’m confused about the whole process.

I’ve never been awarded a Cal Grant for some reason(I think because I didn’t need it—my school costs were and are already fully covered), so what am I specifically supposed to do? Thanks in advance, Matt.

@Cayton - since I was not previously awarded a Cal Grant when I went and did my 14-15 FAFSA and did not add my CCC to it they sent that to the CSAC and updated it automatically.

But my friend who is a renewal (he got one while in CC but is waiting til he transfers to use it) has a different process we called the CSAC together.

They said after March 2nd you should be able to go on their site and click a link that says submit a school change.

Now it sounds like you are in my boat, so let me ask did you add your current CCC to your 14-15 FAFSA? And of you login on the CSAC site and check Cal Grant Status what does it say?

@cayton
This is kind of off topic, but I notice you are a SMC student as well I’m curious if your gpa verification has been submitted yet?

@TheUnderdog1

It has been. If yours hasn’t been, go to the SMC financial aid office and tell them to do submit your GPA.

@Matt4200

I listed my CC on my FAFSA. Of course, it states that my school of attendance is UCLA when it actually isn’t, lol.

Thank you for the information, @Matt4200. I thought we had to make changes before the March 2 deadline since the app is due on March 2. But it looks like we’re good to go as long as we submitted our FAFSA.

Since no one replied to the thread yesterday and I really wanted answers, I called the Cal Grants office and they said we, the transfers can update our schools on June and the money will forward to the schools. That said, we still get the appropriate amount of cal grants and don’t need to worry about anything.

Cool. Thanks for the info!

Okay so I just talked to the Financial Aid people at UC Berkeley and I asked them about a Cal Grant that was on reserve for the 2013-2014 year. I am transferring this Fall over there and I’m not sure if that 2013-2014 Cal Grant is in my aid package or the proposed 2014-2015 Cal Grant which is pending renewal.

They told me that currently what is included in my aid package is an institutional grant in lieu of the Cal Grant, and when the Cal Grant comes in they will replace it and the aid amount will stay the same. But that doesn’t tell me if they are including the reserve Cal Grant from 2013-2014 in my aid package.

I’m a bit confused, has anyone been in this situation? I’m trying to figure out if I can use both of those award years for my first year of tuition at Berkeley.

@theowlmoon: I had this exact same thought if I would be able to use both, but unfortunately, no, you cannot. "Berkeley works carefully with its limited grant dollars in order to support as many students as possible. We do this in part by setting a maximum institutional gift aid eligibility for each student that may be met by a combination of institutional, federal, and state grant resources. Your eligibility for institutional grants will change if you recieve the Cal Grant. "

@imaplealot: I am referring to both Cal Grants. Am I able to use the 2013-2104 grant along with the 2014-2015 grant for tuition for 2014-2015?
