I'm a current sophomore looking to transfer to a good business school in NY.... What are your opinions of schools for a B average student? I know nyu & Columbia are not an option....

What part of business are you interested in? School vary largely depending on what you want to do (ie: corporate finance, wall street, etc.)

B average, I’m assuming, is a ~3.0.

With grades in that area you should consider Hofstra, SUNY-Baruch, SUNY-Albany, and maybe apply to Syracuse to see if you get lucky.

It is really important to know what part of business you actually want to do though. Most schools are better at one sector. For example, NYU is particularly focused on finance and more specifically wall street esque jobs. With a 3.0 though, you would be hard pressed to get a job trading on wall street anyway.

Thanks for replying!

Yes I have been a 3.0 student my entire freshmen year, although I am striving to improve my GPA…
I want to focus on marketing/business management as a business major. Are any of the schools you listed focused on this sector of business?

Hofstra is decent for marketting, Syracuse would be solid for management and/or marketting, but it is most likely a reach for you with your current GPA. I would apply there anyway as one of your reaches. Hofstra is a definite possibility with those credentials, and they have decent management placement and pretty good marketting placement. You could also look at University at Buffalo which is a state school in Buffalo, NY. I’m assuming that by NY you didn’t mean exclusively the city. If you did, the list is a lot smaller. None of the schools I gave you were in the city.

You said a “good school”. You should really focus on bringing up that GPA. If that’s not going to happen this year for you, then definitely transfer to a Hofstra or U Buffalo level school. If you are doing really well this year, Syracuse or Fordham become more attainable. Fordham is in the city and Syracuse is in Syracuse, NY.

Did you just finish your freshman year? If so, make sure you buckle down next year if you really want to transfer to a better school. Hofstra and U Buffalo are really not great schools in the grand scheme of things. If you just finished your sophomore year, what’s your GPA now?

Yes, I just completed my freshman year… My current school is simply an ‘ok’ school which is why I want to attend a better school for better opportunities once I graduate.

I’ll definitely focus 100% on raising my GPA this year!

Thanks so much all of the information!
