I am currently entering my first year in engineering, and I was curious as to whether or not I should be using AP credits for core classes if I am interested in transferring. These classes include Calc 1/2, Physics Mechanics and E/M, Biology, Computer Science, and a couple others. Some of the colleges I am interested in transferring to require core classes that overlap with these AP’s to be taken before applying (for example UMich Ann Arbor), and I was wondering if taking the credit for these classes would preclude me from transferring.
Will you be starting at a four year school where you can study for a bachelor’s degree in engineering, or some other school like a community college?
In general, if you intend to transfer, you need to be aware of the AP credit policies of the schools you want to transfer to, as well as the school you are attending. This may require retaking courses that you may have AP credit for to a greater extent than if you go to a school which you intend to graduate from. Michigan engineering AP credit policy is given at https://admissions.umich.edu/apply/freshmen-applicants/ap-ib-credit#Engineering .
Besides the transfer issue, you probably want to try the old final exams of the college courses you are allowed to skip with AP credit in order to verify that you know the material well enough to take the next course in the sequence.
I will be starting at a four year school. As for the final exams, I have previously taken a look at the material.
