Transferring to Michigan

I’m hoping to transfer to Michigan, will have 31 credits at the end of this year. I was wondering what the engineering requirements are for chemical engineering. On their website I’ve seen it say they require two years worth of college level math, but I’ve also seen conflicting information. Is that true, and if it is, how else can I transfer as a rising sophomore for fall 2016?

for a CoE transfer, it doesn’t matter what grade you are currently in, but you must complete the required prerequisite courses on the college of engineering website under info for transfer students. It’s something like Calc I, Calc II, multi calc, diff eq, physics I, physics II, general chemistry, and maybe a few others.

This typically takes students four semesters to complete all courses, so most CoE transfers apply as incoming juniors. However, it could certainly be done in fewer than four semesters, especially with AP credits. Be aware that the AP credits received at your current university may not be equivalent to those credits at UM, so you may want to retake the courses at your current university. When I spoke with an admissions counselor over the summer, she made it apparent that they were very adamant about transfer applicants completing all prerequisite courses listed on the website. Let me know if this is helpful

COE at umich has two types of transfers: regular transfers and cross campus transfers. If you are currently at another institution, you are a regular transfer. If you are at some other unit on the umich Ann Arbor campus (e.g., LSA), you are a cross campus transfer.

If you are a regular transfer, you need the equivalents of the following completed:

Calc 1 (MATH 115)
Calc 2 (MATH 116)
Calc 3 (MATH 215)
Diff eq (MATH 216)
Calc based physics 1 + lab (PHYSICS 140/141)
Calc based physics 2 + lab (PHYSICS 240/241)
Gen chem or orgo 1 + lab (CHEM 130/125/126 or CHEM 210/211)
Introductory programming (ENGR 101 or EECS 183)
English composition (ENGLISH 125)

If you are a cross campus transfer, you need the following:

MATH 115
MATH 116
PHYSICS 140/141
CHEM 130/125/126 or CHEM 210/211
ENGR 101 or EECS 183
First year writing course

So basically, regular transfers require two years worth of math (if you can get AP credit for calc 1 and calc 2, then that can become one year), and cross campus transfers require one year of math.

Here is the transfer equivalency database for the COE: http://apps.engin.umich.edu/equivalencies/

I do one person a few years ago who got the required classes out of the way at Michigan Tech his first year and transferred into UofM the second year. I presume he “went” at junior status or quite close and came in with AP or high school taken college level classes.
