Transfers to USC's SCA Fall 2011!

I figured I would create a forum for anyone transferring to the School of Cinematic Arts at USC for Fall 2011. I am applying for Film Production. This would be a good place to ask questions about applications and supplemental materials, especially considering the deadline is almost here! Feel free to add anything! We should try to get this thread noticed and create a community of Film School applicants, which would help the application process go much smoother!

Finally! It’s a wonder noone made this before, seeing as how SCA is one of USC’s most prized schools.

Now. Does anyone know whether SCA sees our general application info, such as the essay we submit to USC, or if they just see the supplementary materials?

Holler.

Hey panther13,
I was thinking the same thing, wondering why no one made a thread for SCA. I’m also wondering the exact question you have. Anyone know how to bump a thread?

… tough crowd lol

Yea don’t know why no ones on here, but I did find out the answer to ur question, SCA gets the full general application along with the supplemental app, so yea they look at both, I called their office today and they said they receive the full application at the same time as the regular school

Great. Thanks, man. edits personal statement

Yeah, I’m trying to transfer too. Do you guys know how we upload our visual sample? Do we just paste a link into a document and upload it? I emailed SCA but they never responded.

@marbas

I’m not sure how to upload, haven’t tried yet, but I thought I saw somewhere you’re supposed to submit ur general app and then you supposedly get sent an email about how to send the supplemental materials. But DO NOT take my word for it, I’m very unsure, but I recommend you call SCA, I’ve called several times to ask questions, it’s really easy to get ahold of them. Let me know what they say, I’m curious too.

I am posting the link to a document and uploading it. Are you guys both youtube-ing or vimeo-ing or what? I think it’s kind of funny how you can just go to youtube or vimeo, type in “usc visual sample” and size up the competition lmbo

Hey guys!

My personal statement is about 550 words. I don’t know if that’s too short, considering they set the cap at 1000 for production. What do yall think?

Maybe try it and maker longer…? 1000 words is set as a guideline, so I’m assuming they want you to come close to that. Plus, I figure the more you can praise yourself, the better off you would be…

Thanks for the advice, Singh, but I just left it as is… I didn’t have anything else to say, really. lol

@panther

I called USC and that’s what they told me to do too; put a like in a document. I put mine up on youtube; there’s a link to it in the USC transfer thread. Yeah, I like that about this year. Last year everyone had to send in a DVD, now we can look and see how ours compare to the majority of them.

Oh yeah, Does anyone here know how many transfers get admitted for film Production. I know the program is capped at around 50-60 students, but how many acceptance letters are going to be given to outside transfers?

Nice, a SCA thread! :smiley:

@Marbas: I had an email exchange with the SCA asking this very question concerning the Screenwriting program. For us, there is no “transfer cap” because we will be evaluated with the freshmen. Whoever is deemed worthy will be deemed worthy. One year might have half transfers, one year might have two. It all depends on the applicant pool

Thanks sydneyral!

What did you guys write about in your personal statements? I found what they put to be very generic.

@marbas

Thanks for confirming! Now I’m just trying to decide which video to use as my visual sample. :/

My personal statement was kind of all over the place :frowning: But I think it did a good job of summing me up. Why what did you write about?

I’m applying to the Screenwriting program…so I had THREE personal statements.

For the one that was required for USC, I wrote about how I worked my ass off for a year in order to buy myself a car when I learned that my dad was going to sell the beater I was driving.

For my “emotional moment” essay, I wrote about how I attempted to donate blood and was turned down when the nurse said I was too frightened to stick (blood pressure, anxiety, etc) and how awful I felt that I couldn’t help people who needed my blood.

For my “autobiographical character sketch”, I wrote about how my high school’s television program helped me open up and transform from the fake girly girl into the carefree lover of comedy I am today.

just turned in everything. Good luck everyone! Hope to see you guys at film school!

I did my Personal statement about a couple years ago when my family was going through a tough time financially. I talked about how everything I experienced changed my view of almost everything and how I want to tell the kind of stories that challenges people. It definitely wasn’t my best essay ever. My voice was all over the place and I was having a lot of trouble deciding what to write about. I just turned it it at exactly midnight. I hope it’s good enough though, I had to miss a Precalculus quiz just to work on it.

I hope my other materials more than make up for it though. I think the rest of my app was pretty strong.

Thanks! You too!
