Transfers, where are you requesting to live?

Ok, so a lot of people on here seem to really want to live in the Transfer Center. But, when I visited the campus, I thought the transfer center was pretty disgusting. It's probably among the worst dorms I've ever seen. I know the transfer center arranges activities for the residents and that it'd be easier to meet people because everyone would be an incoming transfer student. But is it really worth putting up with a building that's going to be demolished in 2 years? Will life in say a general dorm or in one of the new west campus dorms be that much more difficult for an incoming transfer? If you guys could share where you are requesting housing and some of your reasons, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
Andy

Risley
Transfer Center
Eco

In that order. Or at least, that's the order I listed it on the housing form. I'd be happy to live in any of them. I picked the Transfer Center for obvious reason - wanting to make friends quickly. I put Risley first just because it's basically a description of who I was in high school - heavily into the arts, and a group of friends who were the same, and a little bit separated from the rest of the school because of it. Risley just seems like it has so much to offer right in the dorm, so I've got my fingers crossed. As for Eco, I'm a big hippie tree hugger, and would like living in a kind of pro-active dorm. I visited a friend who lives there now...her dorm room is so nice. The whole building is really, really "nice" again, for lack of a better word, and I like the concept behind it and the smallness of it. The only reason it's last is because it's so far away. In the end I just tried to pick dorms that I felt I'd have something in common with all the people, because really, that's how you'll make friends - shared interest (the arts, the environment, whatever), not just shared experience (being a transfer).

And I'm very excited to find out where I'll be living and who I'll be living with! Where did you request?

I haven't sent in the form yet (oops). I'm thinking of putting transfer center as my 1rst choice. It's just a little hard for me to do when there are alot nicer buildings available. But, I think it'd be weird to be in a dorm where the majority of the people are returning students and I'm coming in totally green. Maybe I'm just a wuss. lol

My first choice was McLLu. I wanted something on North campus because I didnt want to have to walk up a hill to class everyday. My old school is extremely hilly and I just want to avoid that as much as possible.

I also wanted to be close to Ujaama, but not in Ujaama. Though, Ujaama is my second choice.

one of the people in my block backed out and so one of my friends who was in a double with her ended up with a transfer student. I know this is probably the IDEAL situation, but my floor had 2 transfer including her, and we ALL got to know each other really well, and became fast friends. Of course, my floor was already dysfunctional, but after orientation week, this transfer who lived with my friend really didn't hang out with the other transfer. She ended up making friends with the kids in her department, theatre. with that said, I would recommend you do that, because one, you will make friends with old students faster and many probably have the experience with the courseload et al to help, and being surrounded by newbies who may not know xyz. and secondly, yup, the transfer center sucks. I think the only options however, you are given are the transfer center and the class hall, which sucks just as much, but, I think that a few ppl in the other dorms probably don't return, and those spots are given to transfer students. anyhoo, i think anywhere you live, you will enjoy as long as there are great people that surround you and you feel comfortable with them.

Wait a sec., you guys can actually rank your preferences? I thought you can't for regular dorms unless you are doing those program houses like Alice Cook.

I did my application for housing online. So...I don't remember seeing any choice ranking section?

Nvm, I looked through it and realized why I wasn't see it.

I want the transfer center, but apparently I said I don't want to live in a program house. Any ideas if I can call in Monday morning to request a change on my form? I know that they don't do housing for transfers for quite some time.

Now...why is the transfer center so bad? Never been to Cornell nor have I seen pictures of it. All i know is that it is being torn down soon and that Sperry (I think) is currently being torn down or is being renovated.

Also, transfers students will be placed into upper classmen dorms right? I share the same concern as the previous poster in that it'd be difficult to fit in. I can still participate in the Transfer center activities even though I don't live there right?

kkl, yes to everything in your post, I think.
Yes, call them if it's a concern, they will probably try to help you out.
Yes, you can still participate in the Transfer Center if you don't live there (I plan on it)
Yes, transfers go into upperclassmen dorms and program houses.

The transfer center is just really run down and dirty(at least when I saw it). It's an older building, but not old enough to have an architectural value (it's ugly). Sperry is right next door to it and is identical in design. The difference between the new housing built nearby and the transfer center is drastic.

hmm...then i really need to consider whether or not I want to live there.

I put down a single as my first choice.

Odds of getting that isn't good right?

alice cook
transfer center

i put down a single also....the transfer center isn'tsounding all that good right now...
