I can't seem to be able to decide on the transport to Cornell. Can anyone suggest which airport is a good place to stop at?

Where are you from? There are three major airports around New York that people tend to use.

Get on it, by the time you dally around your ticket prices may have doubled!

I’m an international. Planning to join the PREPARE programme, and of course, hopefully to settle down early. I heard there are volunteers to pick the freshman up for PREPARE at the airport. Do u know which airport is’t? Pls advise! Thanks

The cab ride from the Ithaca airport to Cornell is usually around $20 or there is a bus for $1.50.

The cab ride from Syracuse is closer to $100 or you can take the Ithaca airline Limousine service for $80 one way (I think).

In pleasant weather, the Ithaca airport really is lovely to fly into. In the winter it can be hit or miss with a lot of canceled flights.

What abt Tompkin? Is’t anywhere close too? Also, a problem with airport transfer is that the checked in luggage may get lost…Does it happen often in US airports?

Tompkins county airport is the Ithaca airport.

You can also fly into Binghamton (BGM) which is about 56 miles away from Ithaca. From there you have to take a cab to the bus station, then get on the shortline bus to Ithaca.

Or you fly into Syracuse (Syr) but it’s a bit harder to find transportation from Syr to Ithaca. Or you can fly into any of the 3 new York area airports: LaGuardia LGA, KennedyJFK, or Newark EWR. Form those airports you would take a cab or a bus to union station where you would then get on a bus for the 4 to 5 hour trip to Ithaca. The buses run very frequently.

Many flights connect into Ithaca from Philadlephia as well.

you will be coming into Ithaca a bit earlier than most students for the pre-orientation so flights may not be as difficult. Contact the int’l student dept to see where they are offering to pick you up. then realize that flying in with all your belongings and taking a bus is going to be difficult. Esp. after your very long flights to the US.

Previous posters coming from very far away have posted about flying into one of the big NYC airports, but then had to get by cab to the bus station. Then it is a 4 hour bus ride.

There is no regular easy way to get to Philadelphia.

When you have more info to share on your flights from your home country, another poster may be able to give you first hand info on how they made the int’l trip.

if you fly into ithaca, buses (routes 32/72) run every hour and are free with your cornell id, $1.50 otherwise. Taxis are about $20.

if syracuse, huge pain if no one’s picking you up. Ithaca Airline Limousine works but is expensive ($80), dirty and only runs from 7am - 7pm

if NYC, get to the port authority bus terminal and take a shortline/greyhound bus to ithaca ($55) OR get to the cornell club in NYC and take the much more comfortable campus bus ($100)

he/she won’t yet have an ID as they are arriving to register as a student.
he/she may be uncomfortable hopping on a bus as they will have jsut arrivd in the US from …where?

Yeah I can understand that memphismom, but it is obviously a great bargain and really is convenient…But that’s why I also recommended a taxi, OP you can call Ithaca Dispatch at 607 277 7777 - it’s usually a 10 minute wait.

Is it possible to fly L.A. to Syracuse, and then fly again from Syracuse to Ithaca?

Saugus: there are no flights from syracuse to ithaca, it’s only 50 miles away. Your best bets would be to use Delta through Detroit or United through Newark. Honestly I’d recommend trying to get straight to Ithaca if you’re coming here for the first time as Ithaca Airline Limousine isn’t all that convenient

Congrats on getting into Cornell!!

I am a He :)

I was thinking of getting to Tompkins as the pick up service is available there- at least that’s what I saw on the website. Any advice?

A related question:
My son is coming in as a transfer student. Move-in and orientation are on the same day, and he will be flying in from a western state. It seems like a bit much to try to take a red-eye and arrive exhausted on campus in the a.m.
Are there reasonable hotels to stay overnight in or near Ithaca?

Most freshmen will be arriving Thu and move in on Fri because they will have a set time to move in. As a transfer, he probably could get into his dorm any time he wants because he will be living at the transfer housing. Orientation shouldn’t be that big of a deal. If cost is a concern to you, I think taking a red eye will be fine. I wouldn’t be surprised if most hotels around Ithaca are all booked by now.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if most hotels around Ithaca are all booked by now.”

Yeah, I was afraid of that. I thought my son was also assigned a set move-in time, but you’re probably right that there is more leeway for transfer students.
Thanks.

All the dorms have set move-in times…
