I’m considering going to San Luis Obispo but the only thing that is holding me back is the distance and how often I would be able to go home. I looked up amtrak and it takes six hours which is really long and greyhound is around 5 and costs around 80. Also, I checked airtickets and it’s around 400. It’d be pretty pricy to go home every week or even every two weeks.

For those who go there and live around Los Angeles, how do you guys get home? I’m hoping I can convince my parents to let me drive but I don’t think I want to drive that long. Is there a cheaper way of transportation or is driving the best?

I say if you can't hitch a ride with someone else (and pay half the gas) take amtrak. There's a station right on campus, and you can work on hw on the ride. If you drive yourself, you can't do anything (other than drive) during that time.

I would suggest not bringing a car the first year, though. Parking's a ***** (though relative to other colleges it's actually pretty good).

I live in L.A county and I'm going to be driving my freshman, that's if i can get a parking permit :[. I think the cheapest method of transportation is probably driving. When I drive home I'm probably going to find someone to come with me so he or she can help pay for my gas ;]

Yeah driving sounds good like carpooling. I'm kind of scared to go and also being a minority (asian). Have you guys been to SLO? Is there much to do around there?

SLO is a cute little college town. Good shopping downtown..which is like a 10 minute walk outside of campus. There's a movie theater as well and the beach is about a 15 minute drive away.

My son lives in south Orange County. He's a freshman and we would not let him take his car. He has taken Amtrak once (there is a bus that picks you up in front of the dorms and takes you to the SLO station). It is a long ride, but he liked being able to get all his homework done before coming home. He has made many friends in the dorms that live in Orange County and always is able to hitch a ride. He is also able to get to the grocery store, beach, etc. with friends. It will work out without a car. I wouldn't want to hassle with it my first year up there.

We live in SLO and my son goes to UCLA. He has taken Amtrak and it is a long trip...plus he has to get from Union Station to Westwood after the train ride. There is a bus shuttle Silverado Stages - Going the distance for travelers - Coast Flyer LAX Shuttle That goes from SLO to LAX. Shorter and more comfortable trip. It's $50 each way and only leaves 3 times a day I think. But Like CalPolyMom says you can hitch a ride with someone.
